Oil leak :-( - SV650.org

This morning I wheeled the bike out of the garage, started up and rode 1/4 mike to the petrol station. Put fuel in, went into pay and by the time I got back to the bike it had a large pool of oil underneath.

Rode home, it wasn't running out, just steady drip and only up the road. A quick look at underneath and a search on here makes the clutch cover gasket seem a likely culprit.

I'm trying to track one down for tomorrow but wondering if there would be anywhere else it could be (known areas?) and also is it with doing any other jobs while I'm fitting that???

Depends what bike you've got.
If it's a pointy (2003 onwards) then check the pipes to and from the oil cooler, especially around the banjo bolts.

clutch cover's likely - silicone sealant will do that.
People sometimes get the massive allen key head bolts on the left hand side of the engine leaking or it could be your engine casing bolts - had them leak before.

Talcum powder is a good way of investigating oil leaks just don't powder really hard to reach places or it's a night mare to get off!

Yes inded. SOrry I forgot to say its a 2002 curvy (sk1 i think)

Check both the sump plugs also, I recently had a leak from both of them and the clutch cover, though a new o-ring, washers and some gasket sealant seem to have done the job *touch wood*.

Clean the bike with degreaser and apply some talc, go for a short ride and the leak location will be clearly seen.

On a Curvy it is most likely the clutch cover, although not all 2002 models had a separate clutch cover. The best thing to do is remove the cover, re-seat the o-ring and smear silicone sealant over the top. Refit the clutch cover, torque the bolts to 10Nm (no more than this) and leave the silicone to dry.

It is a common problem with the early SV's and the reason the side casing went to one piece. My 800 has a dodgy clutch cover which I have resolved with the method above.

As soon as its running, its coming straight out of an area behind the front sprocket.

Clutch pushrod seal? Is it a seal, paper gasket or 'o'ring?

google wemoto first result should be a yellow colour schemed website, they're usually very good for spares. Pretty sure they should sell one
