Mine has snapped, is this going to be a problem? Eg should I stop riding it until fixed?

No and no, although you may want to be careful if there is a chance of water getting in.

It allows air to get into the tank to replace the petrol that has flowed into the carbs, the little thingy (technical term) that screws into the tank contains a one way valve that allows air in but no petrol out.
Most modern bikes (eg the SV) combine this function into the fuel cap. Druid
