Checking the bike over?

Hi all.

basicly im going for a quick shower and then im going out to give the bike a good going over and a nice wash.

last weekend i went to anglesey from cov and so its had a hard time and im going to guess that some parts of the bike will have taken a beating or whatever. so i was wondering if anyone could give me a list of stuff to check over when doing a general check of the bike. ive got the day to myself so ill be taking my time.

if anyone could help that would be ace.

i know ill be checking oil tyre pressures etc.

just need a more in depth list.

Obviously also check the coolant. Look for any grime around switches (clean them with WD40), check the side stand swtich and clutch switch (clean with WD 40). Check condition of chain; is it too saggy, is it clean and lubricated enough. When I clean by bike, I often clean and lubricate the chain at the same time; also, I take the front sprocket cover off and check the worm-drive bit, and clean that out.

Get some oil into things like the gear lever and stuff, so they move all nicely and freely

Check your brake lights and indicators etc work all fine. Just have a good inspection for anything loose, broken, chaffing, leaking. If you see it, fix it, or make a note of it to get someone to fix it.

When was the last trime it was serviced, if it's been a while I'd do one & check everything else while you in there as a lot of checks would be part of a service anyway.

Check your oil level, check your tyres (condition wise then pressures, check your chain condition and tension lube if necesary, check your brake pads & if you can be arsed piston movement, grease all your pivot points and check bolts are in ok, Adjust your clutch etc..

That the kind of thing you're after? TBH on a day like to day I'll be riding the thing!

see i wonna ride mine. but i have the rescue ride tommorrow bright and early. it really needs a check over. im thinking of stripping it of its clothes and taking a good hard look at the thing.

Good point on the service; oil change is most important really, if it hasnt been changed in the last 5000 miles go get some 10w40 semi synth and a new oil filter, change it. ,Only takes half hour (warm engine for 10 mins, drain oil, then take off oil filter and drain the rest, have a cup of tea, then put on new filter, put back sump plug and fill the engine up, start engine, run for a minute, then re-check level and top up).

but when i got home i put new oil in her and lubed up the chain. the big clean comes up next weekend, after pay day

You could always use my old favourite excuse, oil changes & chain lubing is best done when the bike is warm

I had a brilliant ride today, best I've felt on a bike in a long time.

Also tell him that's what G/F's are for. Especially as he treated her to a nice romantic break away last weekend
