I passed my test in July last year and bought my SV in December. I have done about 6000 miles on it since then and am reasonably happy with it. Although I have got no-where near the limits of the bike I have started to find it's weak points and am thinking of maybe getting something different for next summer.
First though was a 600 sports bike like a GSXR or CBR 600 but after wasting another night shift trawling through bike reviews etc I came across the 954 Fireblade. This bike is lighter than the SV and also a lot of 600s from the same era. It looks amazing, doesn't seem any less comfortable than the SV and if I save over the winter and get a good price for the SV I Could probably afford one. Even the insurance isn't too bad. Now my questions are what difference would I notice? Obviously the Fireblade would be quicker but it will only go quicker if I ride it quicker or am I going to find myself with too much power and popping wheelies and spinning the back wheel all the time? Is the handling that much better and will it make me a better rider as I will be more confident going into turns. I know a lot of people will suggest putting a GSXR front end on the SV but I can't really be bothered with that. Also I know I need to test ride one but I probably wont find the answers I am looking for in a half hour ride. Cheers

You'll notice a massive increase in quality if you do upgrade.
Not much point in a Fireblade on the road, as the SV will handle everything the road can through at it really. Although you'll probably have an easier comfier ride on a better bike. A Fireblade will cure the annoying problem of straight line warriors at trackdays, though. ![]()

Theres plenty of point to it.
Better brakes, better chasis and better suspension than your SV, it'll need treating with more respect than your SV does, i.e. you cant nail the throttle coming out of corners etc etc you have to be alot gentler and progressive with the throttle. It'll take you a little whilst to adjust to it, but as long as you dont go trying to ride it flat out from the word go and take your time to get used to it, theres nothing to fear. You might miss the engine braking of the SV, especially if you have got lazy with not using your brakes etc etc, but then the brakes on the blade will more than make up for it and despite what some people think IL4's do have engine braking anyway... I'd say go for it. |

Ha, Bargain! TBH I don't really like the new blades, they are too track focussed. The 954 looks like a good road bike.

the force is strong with this one.
if and its a big if, you can aford to insure it, i would say go for it. (i did) its an awsaome bike, and still said to be the best all round blade every made the 02 is not as good as the 03, mainly due to fueling problems, not that there is anything wrong with the 02 a power commander would sort out. i did germany to cardiff in a day on my 954 i was a little bit achey, but they are alot more confertable than the newer bikes. check its had the recall on the forks done, but they are prety much bombproof. |
