Only been riding for about 18 months on the SV650s, as a 6' guy with big build I find the SV pretty forgiving and an easy ride, nothing to scary about it. My question is, as a new rider, would upgrading to a GSXR750 be like stepping out of a Mondeo into a Ferrari or is the difference not too horrific? i.e. Are the two bikes worlds apart in terms of safe handling for a new rider?

Yeah seen that, good thread. My question was more about am I going to end up painting the road with my skin on the first journey because of the huge difference in power, or is it not that much different?

Well, at a whiff of throttle, an SV makes little power...and a GSXR750 makes a similar amount of power.
Dont worry about the power, because the throttle works both ways! |

there a world apart in terms of power and handling....but dont forget its all in your right hand...ride safe and steady, build up the miles getting used to it and u WONT have any problems....whereas jump on and give it beans and u will most likely go straight on at the first bend lol...

I changed to my 750 after 2 years on my SV. It took a bit of getting used to. Throttle response and braking power mainly. Just take it steady till you get used to the characteristics of the bike and you'll be fine. its quite docile below 7000rpm, theres a nice sweet spot between 7 - 10000rpm thats alot of fun to ride in and then 10000rpm is just a mad rush all the way to the limiter. Treat with it some respect and some self restraint on your part and you'll be fine.

as ive said before i think the gsxr makes me a safer rider, better set up, brakes, suspension make me feel safer and loads smoother and stable.

You should adapt to the Gixxer fairly easily. BUT just be aware that with the better suspension, etc it is a lot easier to go fast, and potentially put yourself in a situation that you're unable to get out of safely. Keep this in mind and I'm sure you'll really enjoy the bike
