Default Calling i-phoners

My lad has a contract with O2 and wants to upgrade to an i-phone for xmas. He wants the 16gb 3G-s version. O2 won't do him a decent deal as he has 12 months to run. They say he has to cancel the contract and start a new one.

Looks like the best thing is to buy a pay as you go version, which O2 say he can use on his contract.

Is this the bast way? Best I can find is £440, which is still cheaper than cancelling his contact and taking a new i-phone contract out.

Any ideas on the best way to get him i-phoned up?

Cheers Keith

Just watch O2, they will probably try and make you pay the remaining 12 months of his contract.

Surely that's the whole point of a contract.

keep and eye out for iphones on other carriers hitting the market..orange and vodafone will / have iphones from 2010. I guess the price of handsets should fall.

Well, I'd say bah humbug and tell him to sort it out himself, but that's not terribly generous.

If you're going to buy him an iPhone off contract or on pay-as-you-go to use with his existing phone contract, make sure his current contract has a data bolt on or reasonable allowance. A smart phone without a data allowance is a little pointless, aand can leave him with an unpleasant bill for downloads.

Not quite - but the Iphone he wants is £87 on the new contact, and it will cost him around £370 to cancel. Total is more than a PAYG Iphone

According to the O2 shop in Derby I can buy the phone on PAYG and change the contract to be the same as if I'd took an iphone contract out, at the same price. So it's all a matter of (cost of cancelling contract + the price of the phone when taking out an iphone contract) vs. (cost of the PAYG phone).
