Default Photography Opportunities?

With all the threads on different elements of photography, i was thinking about what you'd take photographs of?

Extreme examples, but could you take photos of people in distress or pain etc. Photos that could look amazing but that could make you look thoughtless/be controversial photos.

Chief Nguyen Ngoc Loan shots a young man, whom he suspects to be a Viet Kong soldier. Supposedly the bullet had just been fired when the photo was taken...

Sniper shots hit James Meredith at the University of Mississipi...

These are both Pulitzer Prize winners. Admittedly, most of us would never be in these situations, but could you stay cool and take a photo in situations like these.

...Or would you feel compelled to help/be too shocked to photograph.

If you dedicate your working life to being a photojournalist, something i set out to do when i finished my A levels in the art, then you do put yourself in those places and know that you never, ever leave the house without at least 2 cameras.

You also know that like a wildlife cameraman who is filming lions on the hunt, you are there only to document and record for others to see what you saw and they would not see otherwise.

With the massive explosion of digital cameras and mobile phone cameras tho it means that this type of work is being largely lost and replaced with bad quality snaps, and by bad quality i dont mean just low pixel rates but badly composed and badly timed shots.

back in the day when i used to shoot on film...remember those days, lol... i had to carry to cameras with me. 1 had colour film in it and the other very high speed black and white film to get a nice grainy effect.

Its good to carry a camera and be ready to use it ... just dont come to london and try it tho or they'll wanna arrest you for being a terrorist.

If the weapon had just fired you would either see the gasses blowing out the barrel or the victim would be missing most of the LHS of his face

Very strong pictures, there was an articler a while ago about the photographs that changed history

Lots of emotive photos in there, like the Vietnamese girl running away from the napalm, the man standing in front of a tank in Tienanmen square and the monk who set himself on fire

My thoughts exactly, as Jay Maisel puts it, it's kind of hard to take pictures without a camera.

I'm still using film for some stuff! It's the cheapest way of getting a so-called full frame camera

And don't shoot kids in the local park, or you'll be done for paedophilia...

I like to take photos which capture something happening, that say something about a particular episode in time. However, I am thoughtfull...at the brands trackday back in june, sid squid didn't want me photographing him after he was taken out, fair enough, I put the camera down. Some people dont mind though, and I try and take photo's which are sympathetic to their plight (not really possible I suppose!)

I try to take my camera with me whenever I go out, but there have been los of things I've missed - I might get a small compact camera to carry around all the time, easier than having the SLR on me

photographs are great, and the ones captured in the heat of the moment are often the most powerfull. I like the arty things people do with their camera's, but often they are quite planned and they dont offer much insight into life

Is his name. Not sure how you pronounce it though, he was the Mahayana Buddhist monk who set himself alight on the roadside.
A very grim photo indeed!
