Default Ducati Multistrada 1000

The prices of these have come down on the second hand market and I have always had a hankering to own one . I was thinking of returning the SV to stock , trading it in for the Multi and then flogging off all my pimp goodies off the SV . I still like the power of a twin but want something with a bit more comfort and quality . Has anyone had any experiences of the 1000 ?

My mate Karl had two, one (red) was a 1000 DS, the other (black) a 1000 DS S. Both OK, the red looked nicer than the black, but not the prettiest of bikes IMHO. He liked it cos he's 6'8", and there was plenty of room on it. He sold the 1000DS to get the 1000 DS S, and sold that for a Hypermotard - he does look very funny on it, it's not a bike for a beanpole. No reliability problems that I recall, I rode the red one a few times, it was damn fast and handled well, but I never pushed it too hard as it wasn't my bike and I didn't want to drop it.

I think I rode with Karl on the Barmouth or Bust ? rideout , he was bloody swift through those bends and very hard to chase down . He did look very tall on that Hypermotard though . I agree on them not being the prettiest , but function takes over form for me at the moment .

Yep, he's the one.

Firstly I'd be surprised if it were much quicker in a straight line than your Pointy, Badger.

They only have 90 ish horsepower and a bit more weight, but the riding position which gives a better view of the road and the superior brakes would mean more confidence, especially on the nadgery welsh roads.

Servicing costs won't be as high as the water cooled Dukes but they still need belts every 12k/2years and the dry clutch will wear out quicker than an SV one. The quality of the parts and design (if it's anything like the 996) will make ownership a pleasure, but there might be a sneaking suspicion that the SV does everything the Multi does for a lot less money.

This is the forum I use for Ducati related guff.

This is the general feeling I have got from friends as well Pete . The air cooled versions are cheaper to service as the engines are not as Balls-out and technical as later ones . The grudge points for me really are , as you have stated , not much better performance , I get a Litre bigger fuel tank , but my insurance group jumps from a 9 to a 15 . I think a test ride is in order . One of the lads in work stated that even though it`s performance won`t be much better than the SV , the torque it has and the running gear will make it a much more inspiring ride . On paper it doesn`t look worth it but a test ride may prove wrong or right . The plot thickens .

This bike would only be a stop gap to getting a KTM 950/990 Supermoto anyway . Until the prices of those things gets just below 4k I won`t be able to afford one without getting Loans and suchlike and I will simply not get credit or a Loan for such things . I prefer to work for it and then buy it as a reward . Only thing I have like that is a Mortgage and I resent having that

I had a 2 hour test ride on one Multistrada (1000DS), handled better than an SV, nice riding position, didn't have the quality feel I was expecting, but suspension and brakes were good, looks wise it left me a bit cold to be honest, but apart from that wsn't a bad bike, surprising (as it's something I don't normally have a problem with) the seat was a little uncomfortable when I got off, didn't notice it at the time, but after the ride it was apparent.

Oh and FYI the 950,990sm & the Superduke are all insurance group 15 as well.

Cheers Mark.

I think you'd be disappointed. On paper it should be a better bike than the SV, but in reality it needs the extra power to compensate for the extra bulk and the plusher suspension to keep it all in check. If you kept the SV and spent a little on it's suspension you'd have a better bike for less money, and I say that not knowing what extras you already have on the SV....

Aye but a different class again over the Multistrada in the fun league for same insurance bracket

GSXR1000 rear shock and Maxton Linears up front with 15w oil .

I have a sneaking feeling that I`m gonna be a bit "Meh" after a test-ride

I've known a few people that have owned them and have never heard a bad word said against them, even after they've been sold. My mate is a right critical ******* about bikes. He had the use of one for a couple of weeks and absolutely raved about it. He said if anything was going to lure him away from a sportsbike that would be it. If you knew him you'd know that is high praise indeed!
