I'll be interested if it is as my money would be on the cam chain tensioner but I don't know the sound you have nor what a rattling shim sounds like against a CCT.

What he said, a sticky camchain tensioner is by far the most likely problem.

Search on the subject and there's plenty to read.

If it was rattling shims would it be the valve clearances that were way out? (Have you had the valve covers off and measured them?)

Checking the clearances is easy, and checking the tensioners by winding them in, rip the carbs to get at the front, take it out and make sure it springs back and does not return under force.

I can send you part of the haynes manual as pdf if you like

Good morning all.

Ditto the Squid, & if it is the tensioner then you had better get it sorted, for if it lets go it could get rather costly.
As said, checking the shim clearances is relatively easy, changing them however is a touch fiddly.

I note that you're located in Surrey. Depending on which part, you're probably not too far from me. By all means pop it in & we'll have a listen to it.

Cheers.
