Thumbs up Top Box SW-Motech rack

I got rid of my top box and rack (still have the box sold the rack) mainly because I hated the look of the long arms going along the rear panels all the way to the pillion pegs. It also was difficult to get the rack on and off (which I needed to do twice) without getting lots of scratches on the grabrail and some of the bolts you couldn't get too v well plus the rack was bending/in the way of my indicators.

Today I found out that SW-Motech (same make as my bar risers) do a rack that just uses the holes of the grabrail, it also makes the box sit on top of the tail and not hang off the bike high up and behind the bike like the GIVI rack.

It is exactly what I want in combination with a smaller box as I don't need the large size I have at the moment. It would look better, as in much much better, and also wouldn't interfere with my view in the mirrors.

I'm just posting this here as others might benefit from it.

SW-Motech is a german make and a little on the pricey side though!

Do you not think that all that bending moment solely on 2 bolts right next to each other is a bad idea?

wondered about this myself - but for a pillion. How much force gets applied to the grabrail under heavy braking. Still those bolts are big enough to be reasonably confidence inspiring, as long as you're not silly with the weight in the topbox.

Also what is rack and subframe made of. Baph had fatigue failure of part of the subframe occuring. We think due to using lots of weight on rack for lots of miles.

This was always my thoughts too ....... would rather go with the rack ....... OK, it looks a bit OTT, but although I love the look of sportsbikes ..... the SV is a tool .... and I quite like it looking like a London Courier special !!!

ps. WOW - if you want a rack ...... you could have mine (the one you sold me) - £45 !!!

Someone else on here had a SW-Motech rack on their SV (one of the Border Patrol IIRC) and it looked a substantial bit of kit. I'm sure there are photos of it on here somwhere, but I'm to lazy to search.

I agree with the concerns with the bending moment on the 4 grab rail bolts, but isn't that exactly how your Renntec rack fits Y-C? (and that only has two bolts...). OK there is potential to carry more weight in a top-box, but as long as the weight limits are adhered to (yeah right Y-C ) there should be no problem?

I have used one for the last 16k miles and think it's the mutts nuts.

YC was gonna try and fabricate some sort of grab rail extension to it at one point, however I never got round to going up to see him about it.

It looks a million miles better than a Givi rack, however compromises the ability for a pillion to hold on tightly!

Some pics

and the laptop bag I got to go with it

Oooh...get you!

One day mate, one day I'll make it over to see you.

Off to Anglesey Circuit on Sunday...might need a new bike at the end of it...a stainless SV...would be more shiney than the one that's currently being polished by that Liam bloke!
