Default car damaged, legal question and other stuff

there has been road workings on the road i park my car on during the daytime whilst at work, its been going on for the past 4 or 5 days....

parked up this morning usual same place that i do and the road works where on the other side of the road, came out this evening and saw they had been working on the side my car was parked, a trench had been cut int eh pavement about a foot from my car so immediately i thought "oh ffs!!, checked the car and sure enough there was damage to the paint on the passenger side doors from the cutting and when i got to the front there is a massive gouge out of my front bumper, about a foot and a half long and fairly deep as its ripped the plastic out, its quite bad TBF..... now looking at it that sort of damage is not really the sort that would be done without knowing so obviously who's ever bright idea it was to cut the road up knew they had damaged my car but just hoped that i wouldn't (its hard not to)

no one was about so i took the number plate of nearest van park to my car that was on that job, i have the reg but have forgotten the company name, it was called "Options" but I've forgotten the rest so i need to track that van (help needed on that), i also need to prove that it was them that damaged my car and not someone else (help needed on that). Chances are they will be back tomorrow so i'll take it up with the gaffer of the job but just encase they're not i want to track them down

its not normally something i would worry about, the car is clean inside and always works and to be honest its nothing i couldn't repair myself but i want to take it further as its the principle that these idiots decided to cut the road up a foot away from my car and others (doubt it will be just mine damaged)

Maybe the council will know, especially as it's the pavement. If its not them, then a sub contractor. The council should know who's digging up the road/pavement

They'd be my first port of call ( almost a joke there sub - port of call )

Tar must have been from their work. If you haven't done it yet, take some photos
