I'm due a new handset. I'm staying with Orange and they have both the i-phone and the N97 mini on offer.
I mostly use my phone for business: calling, texting and up until now have used the WAP service for checking emails but have not been able to open attachments. I like the idea of GPS for when I get lost on the bike (but that only happens when Mr LPH is leading the way! ![]() So which do you think I should go for?

Then buy a proper GPS!
I have the Nokia N82 and used the GPS on that for my old bike. It wasn't great. You can turn the phone side-on and the display shifts 90 degrees - which is handy when looking at a landscape photo....but every time I turned a corner on the bike the GPS attempted to show me my position side-on. And it would take around 10-30 seconds to get a grip and turn the display back. The maps aren't great outside of western europe, either. ...and there's a subscription for getting directions. Also, to mount it on a bike you'd need a special, waterproof case, which can be found online for £20-30 - but you won't always be able to see the screen clearly thru' the clear-plastic front. The GPS is only really useful as a pedestrian to navigate thru' cities - or for a car owner to attempt to locate where they have parked their car! Of course, that's just my opinion that you are free to ignore.........at your peril ;o) Last edited by Kinvig; 11-01-10 at 10:45 AM. |

I don't actually need full sat nav, just when we've taken a wrong turn, are both looking at the map surrounded by fields and saying "right, where the hell are we?" I'm old fashioned in that I like to use maps when walking and driving.

I say go Android. But I've not got one yet, and I'm a geek, so feel free to ignore me.

I used to upgrade my phone every 12 months. I've tried Nokia, Motorola, Sony and Samsung phones and I though Nokia were by far the best. However, phones quickly become old and battered, and by the time I was about 6-8 months into my contract, I'd start looking for my next new phone.
Then I got an iPhone. This is the best phone I have ever used. My 18 month contract runs out (in three days) but I will not be upgrading. I love this phone. It is intuitive and simple, has all the functionality that I (geek) require, synchronises contacts and calendar data perfectly with my home computer and, unlike most other phones (maybe all other phones), it has a glass screen. This means, even 18 months on, there are no scratches spoiling the display. It doesn't have true, turn-by-turn GPS unless you buy the TomTom application (starts at £50), but it does have Google Maps built in and it'll pinpoint your location or give you directions.

I'd agree with pretty much everything that Kalessin said. Except that you can buy Co-Pilot for the iPhone for £25 which gives you full turn-by-turn GPS and seems to be more highly rated than TomTom.
