Nail + Tyre = ****

Went to go out on the bike last night and discovered a nail in the rear tyre.

The nail is in the centre of the tyre, is it wise/possible to get this plugged or will i have to bite the bullet and fork out for a new tyre?

Also can anyone recommend a tyre dealer in Edinburgh? I don't have the equipment to take the wheel off the bike so will need to get it all done at the garage. I was thinking of taking it to Saltire Suzuki as the service there is second to none but wondering if there maybe anyone else in the area.

If it is in the centre it may be possible to have it repaired.

You have to weigh up the risks of riding it to repair. If it is losing air then it can have a drastic effect upon handling and could cause further damage rendering it unrepairable. If it is not losing air (or much air) you may get away with it. (GF's car had a nail through, but it was at an angle and was rubbing the sidewall making the tyre US)

Have it plugged, but be prepared to try a few places, as some dealers etc don't like pluggin them (they will give the usual spiel of "its a z-rated tyre.... not allowed). I rode with a plug on a set of stock tyres for approx 4000 miles with no issues. Get yourself a pressure guage (if you don't have one) and just keep an eye on it.

having an inner tube fitted may also be possible. ive got one on my front, about 1000 miles so far no problem
