Default Recomend me: Higher Education

Ok, so currently I am in office based admin and project co-ordination. I work for the RNLI in the Engineering office. Its been on my development for a couple years now to try and move towards gaining qualies in engineering so i can have a more active job role and further myself. But nothing has happened and my line manager is NOT really moving this along... Soo i am going to take a more proactive approach and suggest some courses that will eventually lead to a degree in mechanical engineering

I have a degree in Geology already (useful i know for the RNLI )

I am looking for advice of where to start. I know that some courses arent really viewed as valuable within the industry, but am not really sure of what is and what isn’t

So any advice people could provide would simply be super

Rai

So you want to be an "Engineer". Great Britain needs good qualified engineers. Pick you discipline.

Mechanical :- great all rounder, master of none. can get you in automotive, petrochem, power generation, etc. Personally I would then say you need a speciality, such as stress, fluid dynamics etc. All takes a long time, pay isn't great, little respect for joe public etc.

Electrical, already specialised but still multiple industries. Again specialisation needed such as hi voltage, power generation, distribution, switchgear etc.

Chemical. Very specialised, good money to be earned.

Nuclear. Could be a growth area over the next few year. Very specialised and little opportunity to jump between employers etc.

So your first issue one you have decided on the discipline is what course to do. Unfortunately most degree courses will assume you already have the basics so it depends what credits you get for your existing degree etc.

First thing I would say is how good is your maths? have you got a reasonable grasp of calculus etc.

Well given who i work for, i think it will be Marine Mechanical

My maths is ok.. dont get to use maths alot in my current role but have exercised it a little in doing work outside of my job. But not alot. Generally im good at algebra.. not great at calculating long numbers in my head tho

I was a marine engineer before moving onto boat building, wish i still was

its not required to have amazing maths qualifications as they will make you retake them if your really crap. what they will do is make you sit a mechanical comprehension aptitude test (something like that) to determine if you can understand and explain how things work. it depends what mind set you have. Im no einstein and passed it with a distinction but i saw a level people in my grouo fail

geology degree's (and any other science-ish related degree) requires quite a high level of mathematical understanding, aswell as chemistry, they normally make you do a basic course of both before you can graduate anyway, unless you've done them at A-level. So you should be a maths genius really
