Our en-suite shower cubicle smells. Can you tell me how the plumbing should be connected as I think it the smell is emanating from the drain.
The shower base is raised off the floor and the drain pipe goes from under the shower through the wall into the bathroom. There isn't a trap as such under the shower, just a small screw off cap that is below the drain pipe (I thought all drainage had to have a tap to avoid bad smells travelling up the pipe??). Anybody have any ideas on how I can rid myself of this horrible smell? Regards Phil |

Where exactly? Under the shower, under the bath in the bathroom (where the pipe goes after it leaves the shower and goes through the wall, which will be easier to get to in the long run) or somewhere else in the pipework.
Does it need a trap as surely one would have come on the bottom of the shower rather than the shallow trap type thing I have installed? Regards Phil |

Just investigated this further and it appears that it has a 'shallow' trap. I am just checking that this isn't leaking before evaluation my options. I'm hoping a little clean and tighten of all associated connections has solved my problem.

Is it a general damp type of smell or a more yucky something's rotten type of smell. I've had both and a helpful plumber explained things to me.
If it's a damp smell, there's a leak somewhere that needs to be found and fixed. If it's a rotten smell it's more often than not something blocking the exit of dirty water. It doesn't have to be really dirty water, just from the shower is called dirty water. I was advised to try a strong drain/plughole clearing stuff first before calling in the experts or ripping up floorboard. I used good old fashioned soda chrystals rather than an expensive brand of stuff, and sure enough the blockage was cleared and smell went away. Got to be the cheapest first option for trying to fix it? |

Is there water when you look down the waste, if there is, you have a trap
![]() If there is no water, you dont have a trap and obviously its the water that stops the smells coming back up from the drain. |

Fit a plug, but remove it when using the shower.
