I know some of the Cannon models have a remote, but I think they're the expensive ones

you can buy a cheap radio remote for anything with a hot shoe, just about if it has a cable socket.

if you are looking for cheap and cheerful solution your best bet might be CHDK firmware for the canon powershots, it unlocks some functionality, one of which is support for a DIY made remote IIRC.

sorry its not a comprehensive answer, not tried it myself but remember seeing mention of it. I used CHDK on my S3is and it worked great, extending the length I could take shots for and reducing the time in between.

nothing like a DSLR but still nice for free functionality boost

Depending on what you want to do with it - some compact cameras have an interval setting that automatically takes pictures every 5 secs or so. So if yours does this, just buy the biggest memory card it'll take and get used to the idea of deleting all the rubbish ones.

good idea, if you had a bracket that could be left on the bike then you would get used to what would be in the shot, other wise it would be a bit hit and miss.
