Hi All,
I thought I should introduce myself as I am likely to be a regular user of these forums going forwards. I'm new to riding, having only just completed my CBT last week. I am down for my mod 1 training and test next week and mod 2 shortly after all being well. From all the reading I've done over the past couple of months I decided for a first bike I want an SV650, I do plan on doing fairly long runs (~200 miles) and figured the bike was good for that as well as a bit of weekend riding too. I am 35yrs old and like to think I am sensible(ish). So.....I just went and put a deposit down on a Black 2010 SV650 Sport (ex-demo with 60 miles), and think I got a good deal, hence the eagerness to make it mine. So, next on my list of things to shop around for is a good helmet (head more oval than round, Shoei/Arai suit maybe?), a decent textile 2 piece, gloves and boots. I have anything up to about £900 to spend on jacket, trousers, helmet, gloves, boots. Any suggestions on clothing? What should I steer clear of? I do plan on getting separate hip and back protection, any suggestions on this also? Any good online shops to look at? Thanks for any help Last edited by kaivalagi; 19-07-10 at 04:21 PM. |

A licence?.......
Get a nice end can, to free up that beautiful V-Twin melody, and a tail tidy, and you are ready to rumble. Oh and welcome! |

Very Funny
![]() Those slip on can's do sound the business, I'd like to think I can wait until the manufacturers warranty is over but 3 years is a long time! I don't suppose you can remove the baffles from the stock exhaust and re-fit later on? Is it a simple case that you pay for what you get when it comes to motorcycle clothing? I like the look of a Spyke jacket and trousers, but am I paying extra for nothing with those? This is what I'm thinking of: http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/moto...prod/826/49124 |

I'm no expert, and probably one of the least experienced on here, but regarding the clothing; I have found that which ever fits best, will work best. Obviously it needs to be legal and pass the required tests.
I have a £50 Nitro helmet which fits perfectly - much safer than the 'not as well fitting' £600 Aria helmet I could have bought. So I would like to believe that it's more to do with branding. i.e I hope that if I have a crash in my cheap Nitro helmet that it will do as good a job as the expensive Aria I could of bought. If you're worried about the warrenty, I reckon chopping the baffles out the standard exhuast will also viod it. |

I get you on the brand, fit will come first, I know that a Shoei fits me well...I will have to find out what others do...as for trousers I know I will have trouble with finding the right fit unless I go to the gym forever more, does anyone make fitted textile clothing (I've heard of fitted leather but am unsure of textiles).
Looks like I'll be sticking with the stock exhaust for a while, I can give my bike a new lease of life in 2013 ![]() Thanks for the feedback so far I would appreciate more user opinions please Last edited by kaivalagi; 12-07-10 at 02:33 PM. |

Stay clear of Frank Thomas everything, people on here are devided with clothing i.e alpinestar and such but I think Wolf make very good quality clothing and gloves, always get the best you can afford and fitment is the most important issue with helmets and clothing, leathers are not waterproof unless you pay for the new waterproof stuff (expensive), make sure any leathers fit liek a second skin (so tight) they loosen up by 10%, 1 piece is better in a crash than a 2 piece but a 2 piece is more convinent i.e if you need a pee. Fabrics (cordra etc) are waterproof but less effective in a crash. Boots get some with some good ankle protection, unfortunatly boots are very expensive but worth every penny. Gloves are the first thing on the floor in a crash normally so some good gloves are essential with knuckle finger, wrist and palm protection, somwe gloves have a knox palm slide protection which helps stop broken wrists good if not a little uncomfortable sometimes. Forcefild do a 1 piece uper, lower back, hip and kidney proction level 2 around £90 brand new, and I can not stress how important this piece of kit is, it does save lives. And maybe an IAM course or police bikesafe day. An after market exhaust shouldn't raise your insurance and makes the bike sound beautiful. Hope this helps Last edited by SUPERSTARDJ01; 12-07-10 at 02:39 PM. |

That's the sort of advice i really need, thanks.
I think it's likely to be sidi boots (I like sidi from my cycling days) and a Shoei helmet unless I find a better fit. Gloves I'll make sure have the hardened outer pieces. I really do think I want 2 piece textile clothing though, with removable inners etc for all weather use. I like the look of Spyke but haven't looked at more. HG has a sale on right now too, maybe I can find a good deal on their gear? I can't justify going for a rukka outfit, but around £500 or so for jacket and trousers is okay. Keep the opinions coming ![]() |

If you want textiles you can do a lot worse than visiting your local Hein Gericke shop.
When I got my bike I didn't have as much money to spend as you so bought everything second had from ebay, got textile jacket £50, trousers £30, boots £15, gloves £20. Went for a brand new helmet though. Glad I went down that route as I decided after a few weeks I prefer leathers so got a second hand set for £80, leathers seem like they offer a lot more protection and if you want to do a track day you need leathers. After a year I bought a new set of leathers and sold all the textile stuff making a small profit. Buying new stuff is a big investment so make sure it's exactly what you want/need. A mate of mine who got a bike about the same time as me spent hundreds on goretex textiles and never goes out in the rain!!
