Default Jumping speedo

Hi,

I have a strange problem on my SV 650 N from '99. When I reach 8-10.000 rev/min my speedometer starts jumping - it jumps crazier and crazier the higher the revs. When revs drops again, the speedo stops jumping and shows the correct speed at which I am travelling.

I think it has been a problem for quite a while. I know another guy who has the same problem... It is not intermittent. Furthermore I do not think it is mechanical. It is a problem at almost all speeds. Weather I go 20 or 150 km/h the tacho starts jumping if I rev the bike.

Any good ideas on what could be the problem? It seems like there is some kind og interference or noise causing the speedometer to act crazy.

I have tried searching but have not found anything usefull

Thanks!

Regards,
Mads

Check for loose connections to the battery and check your charging system. Speedo jumping is often a sign of more serious electrical gremlins.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

The loose connections at the battery has been checked. A new battery has been mounted because a faulty regulator killed it.

Are you sure this regulator is healthy? If it is letting AC through at high rpm this would cause the problem.

Check all electrics, main fuse for corrosion, there must be a fault somewhere.

The regulator is all new, and it is charging the battery as the manual describes, so I think so?

So all plugs, and fuse holders? Anything more?

just check that it's not going mental at 20V or something at the rpm where you've got the problems.

Inside loom, under tank hinge area there is a connector hidden away where red wire from main fuse splits in 2. It is just little brass crimp wrapped in tape and can rust. That is if there is nothing obvious in rest of loom.

The problem is, at almost all revs but it gets very distinct from around 8k revs. If I look really close, I can see the speedometer gets affected at lower rpms as well.

Okay. I will try and look around. Sounds like a job that takes some time

Thanks.
