Tyres (again!)

Hi, I know this has been done to death in the past but I've searched the forum and the answers are a bit confusing.

Can people offer advice for my rookie mini-twins season (and track days) on best choices of available dry race tyres and wets for the SV?

Hi Steve,

For your first season (or at leas the first few races) you could get away with using someone elses Scrubs unless you're planning to win first time out!

This will save a fortune and if they were good enough for the other persons last lap then they'll be good enough for your first few.

The top of the list seem to be the SC pro (diablo), Racetecs, GP racers or Power Ones. I don't know of anyone racing on Avon Extremes.

A used set of Racetecs will set you back about 40-50 quid. A used set of Power Ones will set you back about 90 quid. So if you are going to buy new tyres you'll get twice as much for your scrubs if you run Power Ones! Worth thinking about!

There's a place on the net selling Pirellis for £199 delivered (can't find the link at the moment) and there are various sellers on ebay selling new fronts at £40 for the GP racer etc.

As to which one you can go faster on, that will be down to your personal feel for each tyre.

For wets, Pirelli/Racetecs are virtually the same tyre and the Dunlops always get very good reviews. I haven't seen a review or heard any comments about the new Michelin wets.

I have a spare wet front (120/70) that you can have for the price of the postage if you like?

I'd like the link for diablo sc's in a 160 for £199 please! You're doing well if you can get them for under £250. Power ones seem to be a bit cheaper but not much; expect to see more people using them this year as it was still nearly all pirelli's last year. You can still get the Dragon supercorsa pro's and they're still good enough for most people and a fair bit cheaper than the diablo's. Didn't see anybody on the new bridgestone 003's but they're bound to be decent and cheaper than the diablo's but again, not by much and the resale value as scrubs is worth considering as you would get morefor the diablo's than the bridgestones. I've never seen racetecs in a 160/60 so I don't know about them. And thats about it for minitwin tyre choice unless you're going to go out on a limb and run chen shing commuter re-moulds (partially worn)...

They were in the specials section of this site but it looks like they've gone up. this site was given to me by the tyre guys at the BSB round at Knockhill last year as being the cheapest site for Pirellis in the UK. And all of last year they were.

Just been quoted £285 for a pair of Diablo supercorsa's and £240 for Power ones? Wont embarrass the dealer but what other prices have members obtained - £199? is that a pair?

£272 delivered is the best I can manage for diablo supercorsas. £240 is pretty decent for power ones, check it's not the street compound. It's a shame for a budget race series I'm paying more for my tyres than I did when I had a thou they last longer, I suppose...

Hi, i am a minitwin rookie this year also, and i have been on the tyre hunt aswell, i am considering the conti race attacks, anyone got any feedback on these, really well priced.

I'd say, for a Rookie, that the Michelin Power Ones would be a spot-on choice. Reasonably priced with excellent support this year in the Bemsee paddock.

Agree with that as Jim at Biketek reported a similar story with the Powers. Something to do with tyre wall rigidity changing the nature of suspension set up requirements over the Pirellis - what adjustments did you have to make - soften up settings?

Interesting to hear from somebody who has tested both back to back. My font forks aren't adjustable in any practical sense at the track so it's mostly going to be the rear. In what sense did they differ? I'd heard the carcass is stiffer so they're a bit harsher and don't handle the bumps as well, is that what you were getting at regarding set up? It's an issue as we visit some bumpy tracks up here. I'm tempted as they can be had a fair bit cheaper than the diablo's.
