Default Moving the subject on slightly from the sad passing of Norman Wisdom...

...to the birth of a different sort of wisdom...my wisdom teeth!! Yes, that time has come I've seen them lurking there under my gums for a few weeks and they have picked their moment and its really not a good one. They've just started to cause me slight aching pains today, I'm getting the distinct feeling the pains will become greater in the next few days...

Now I hate tooth pain like most people, anyone got any tips with how they coped with theirs coming through? I've been told to maybe take antiinflammatories but other than that not a lot can be done, just got to lump it like we did as babies lol.

Failing that, any thrilling and reassuring tales about them?

Thrilling? Yes! Reassuring? Hell no.

I had mine removed, and was freaked out by the 'you won't sue us if we accidentally cut the nerves to your chin' waiver I had to sign.

So, in the chair, IV goes in, general anesthetic is administered, down I go.

Until I wake up. I don't really feel anything, everything is all woozy, but I know there's something in my mouth. So I sit up and spit it out. It's one of the teeth, and it clatters across the floor and slides to a stop next to the radiator.

"Ummm, thank you?" say the alarmed staff.

"No problem," I slur, still heavily dosed.

"You mind lying back down now?"

"Suuure..."

No doubt the IV was adjusted slightly to ensure no further shenanigans. When I woke up, fairly sore (given codeine, yay!) but the worst thing was sticking cotton into my mouth, and then IMMEDIATELY removing it as it had instantly become soaked and dripping with blood.

Not me, someone else. Goes to have their wisdom teeth removed. Wakes up after the op with a sore chest. Looks at the chest, there's a FOOTPRINT.

Apparently the dentist needed extra leverage when hauling one of the teeth out.

(the second one might be an urban legend, but the first one is definitely true)

My bottom wisdom teeth are not growing straight, the biting surface is up against the molars next to them. Dentist x-rayed and they cant pull them straight out, will have to go under general anaesthetic and have them cut out in chunks apparantly. I had the whole, permanant numb chin possibility discussion which is putting me off slightly, need to get reffered by private medical but not got round to it yet.

Oh heck, really not liking the sound of this numb chin possibility! I hate dentists, I hate face injections and I hate teeth! Gah.

Maria - I would love to say that I feel your pain, but I'm afraid I didn't get a bit of bother with mine. They were all through and pain free all the way by the time I was 16.

I did however have a lot of room for them due to many many ID blocks (?) to numb me while different teeth were removed, drilled through, cavities filled, crowns put on...all because my sister and cousins thought it would be funny to sit me on one side of a see saw while they all jumped on the other. I would have been better off letting go and flying, but no! I held on and ended up planting my goofy front teeth in the see saw, making them receed completely into my gums and there began the 7 years of braces and orthodontist work

If my wisdoms had caused me pain as well, I think I would have crawled under a rock and given up!

Hope they come through quickly Maria.

Mine were like this, couple of days on co-dydramol post op and everything was fine.

However, as yours are coming through you should be fine (is that reassuring enough?)
