i was wondering if everyone followed the manual and took the battery off the bike to charge it , as i do or can you leave it wired up as i would like to wire a connecter from the battery to under the pillion seat so i dont have to take everything apart to charge it

Pretty sure you can leave it in the bike to charge it, as I know people do so with the Optimate which i basically an intelligent charger?

if you can, try a trickle charger. They're worth every penny especially if you're leaving your bike over the winter. nothing worse than seeing a dry day, getting your kit on like lightning just in case it starts raining then getting that click cos the battery is flat. The alarms on them just sap the battery out of them

Read the other read about this. I have a connector wired permanently to my battery that comes out of ther side fairing. It is always connected to the optimate when parked in the garage. Same goes for the RGV. |

If it's an Optimate type o'thing you shoudl be fine, if you're charging it from flat with something more manly, then disconnect it as the charger can shove loads of juice though the regulator/rectifier (I believe), which would be bad.

Modern or intelligent type chargers like Optimates will usually be absolutely fine with the battery left connected to the bike.
The advice to remove the battery from the vehicle electrics really came from older type chargers which were very simple and didn't regulate the voltage well and tended to be pretty spikey when switching on/off etc, they could easily overcharge batteries and should never be left charging for long periods (a few hours only typically), and with early car alternators the built-in diodes weren't very tolerant of abuse. Modern vehicle electronics are (generally) more tolerant of over-voltage with pretty decent inbuilt protection designed in. If in doubt then disconnect, but it's worth investing in a modern charger anyway, you can't go wrong with Optimates, batteries last much longer if maintained well (an Optimate is less than the cost of one battery).

The Optimate Charger comes iirc with a lead and connector for permanently wiring to the battery. Dont forget to use an inline fuse close to the battery terminal if you fit one of these though.
