DIY Chain rivet possible?
I've got a new chain to fit to my dads curvy, and since the swing arm is currently off for a refurb I was wondering if it's possible to adequately rivet the soft link using e.g. a center punch with the chain resting on a vice?

My local bike shop does it with the round end of the hammer. I tried to do it this way, but its not easy

You need to be a good shot, hitting 2 hammers together is not a good idea, bits tend to chip off and fly fast.
A punch would work I think, if you have an old knackered one and a bench grinder you could put a blunt point on it and that would be about perfect. |

because to pein a rivet properly without a rivet head stamp yoy rest the pein of one hammer on it and strike the hammer with the other hammer....
or thats how it used to be done when we had real mechanics... |

I've had a search around other bikes forums and it looks like plenty of people rivet their chains without needing the splitting/riveting tool; I'm going to form a rounded end on an old punch and give it a go.
