Default No Oil Pressure Light (Literally)

Hi I swapped out the instrument cluster on my 2002 650S K1 cos there was condensation under the Speedo glass and I couldn’t stand looking at it.

I got a second hand one from EBay – recalibrated to the mileage on the bike to keep the service history and MOT’s in synch. It works perfectly but…

…where the Oil Pressure light should be is just a raised circular blank, as you can see on the attached photo. Of course I didn’t notice this when I bought it.

So I’ve got the choice of leaving it and risking an engine blow out or replacing it with the original or another one. I’m probably going to risk it as the bike has and will continue to be serviced within an inch of its life and extra special attention will be paid to the oily bits from now on.

But I’m really curious to know what bike the cluster came from, the guy who sold it didn’t know beyond it was a 2000, and why Suzuki didn’t include a fairly important warning light. Any ideas?

Could it be possible that the bulb is dead?

I don't think its a bulb issue cos there is just a blank mound where the bulb/light would go, check out the pic.

The old one has a clearly visible red bulb/glass with an oil can on it. This one, unless I'm going mad, has nuffin.

Thanks anyway

TBH if you let the oil get low enough for the light to come on then it's already toasted the crank.

Main use is when changing oil to make sure oil pump has reprimed, especially if you have had it in lots of bits.

I'm pretty sure its just your bulb has gone and you are mistaking the black dead bulb for not being anything there at all. At least those bulbs are fairly easy to replace[1] as there is a little cover over the back.

[1] Well once you get to them, PITA of course to remove all the bodywork to get there

Hi

I have a horrible feeling you are right. I held the original cluster inside the tinted screen on the bike and the red bulb that you can see clearly when it's not covered became a black mound just like on the new one. If you see what I mean.

I'm going to replace all the "toffee" fairing bolts with Pro Bolts sometime soon so I will check then when I can get at the cluster.

Thanks

Default Re: No Oil Pressure Light (Literally) An update

I was fitting mirror extensions to the bike today so I thought I'd take the rest of the upper fairing off and have a proper rummage at the instrument cluster.

I am not going mad – the replacement ones don’t have a light for the oil pressure. Check it out, new one on the left.

There is a space for a bulb round the back of the new one, so I tried a couple of bulbs that I know work and nuffin. Which is not surprising cos even if it was on you wouldn’t be able to see it through the plastic blank.

I might waste a phone call and ring Suzuki Customer Services and see if they can explain it.
