Post Purchase Maintenance?

I bought my 1999 sv650x at the end of November, originally planning to do my tests in December but between bad weather and examiner swine flu it's likely to be mid Feb before I actually get my license.

With that in mind I thought I'd try and do some basic maintenance on the bike myself while it's just sitting there. Aside from the fact that it seemed to run fine on the delivery run, all I know is that it went through MOT in August with no advisories, has a relatively new chain and sprocket, a new reg / rec, and has had one of the front calipers serviced.

I had planned just to change the spark plugs, oil filter and oil. Went to move the bike though and found that front brakes are binding slightly so had also planned to remove and clean them (not taking them apart).

Bike has done 14500 miles and has 3rd service stamped in the service book - is there anything else I should be thinking about doing?

Not much really. Check the throttle and clutch cables are lubricated and moving freely. Check the choke plungers are not sticking. Tyre pressures, brake and clutch fluids look clean and topped up and chain is nicely lubricated. Oh and have a look at the air filter too.

Who services just one front caliper? Do both and rear too.

Oil and filter if you don't know when it's been done last, likewise coolant, go through wiring connectors and protect them all, balance carbs, clean and regrease all chassis bearings. Lots to keep you busy

Cool - thanks. What's best to protect the wiring with? And will I need a stand to do chassis bearings?

I smear all the electrical connectors in contact grease. I think a smear of vasaline would do the same job.
