Default Bl00dy horses!

First off...thanks to a Polish driver falling alseep at the wheel of his artic and going into the back of my friends horse lorry at 55mph (my friends lorry was stationary)...this happened...

There were three horses on board, one got flung out and right across the road and two got trapped. All have had to have metal pulled out of them and extensive stitching and bandaging, but are back home in very safe hands and should amazingly make full recoveries. It's amazing they are all still alive. Including the driver who is shaken up but ok. The driver and the owner of the horses are both freinds of mine from college, so I am incredibly relieved for them. The horses are up and coming eventers of Paul Tapners...he won Badminton last year, so it's a bit of a blow for the team, but he and the team are also very glad it wasn't worse.

Then, on a rather more minor note, the mare I have just taken on decided to earn herself the nickname Beelzebub this afternoon. My friends husband wanted the horses to all be turned out together, so we thought we'd try her with just one to start with and this happened...

My mare (on loan) is the bay with the ears pinned back and mouth wide open. She was making sounds that can only come from the depths of hell. Trevor (yes, that's the other horses name) decided to try and boss her around and she pretty much gave him a pasting. He kicked back, at points, it was bum to bum serious buck kicking at eachother, so we ha to wait for our moment and seperate them as soon as we safely could. Both have cut legs, but no sticthes needed thankfully and both are also sound, so will keep an eye on them.

Moral of the story...don't trust that the lorry behind you will stop and when your husband tells you to turn all horses out together and everyone else thinks it's a bad idea, just tell him to buggor off! I had a feeling she'd be mareish, but she's been out with geldings before so none of us expected this.

In light of the fact that all are fine...Any of you that know horses will see in Flyers face how evil she was today! Luckily, she's an absolute sweetheart to handle and be around. She's just got to stay on her own from now on...lol.

Glad to hear all the horses are o.k, specially the ones in the lorry. what a mess, they must be pretty traumatised, I just hope the driver loses his licence and gets a spell at her majesties pleasure, he should be grateful he's not being done for causing death by dangerous driving cos that would have been the result if he had hit a car.

Daryl.

Loving your Flyer though!
Glad to hear they are ok - but I was saying the same yesterday as some rider couldn't keep her horse under control on the road.
Comes round a corner at approx 20-25 (road been resurfaced gravel everywhere) to find horse with it head in centre of my lane. Do my usual slow down, clutch in to minimise noise pull across as far as i can which isn't too far thanks to the usual row of parked cars. it then decides to buck
One spooked horse, one newbie and one experience motorcyclist and gravel do not make for good combination. I then get a mouthful of the rider for spooking her horse.
I shouldn't tar themn all with the same brush but its getting more and more common round our way Bl00dy riders think that they own the road the pavements and the attitude that come with it stinks!

Sorry GG You ain't included in that of course

Nah...it ****es me off too. All I say to drivers is that if the horse already looks upset, don;t try and go past, no matter how slowly as it is already in a heightened state and could end up on top of you. Just let them calm the horse and get it out of the way. Horses like this SHOULD NOT be on the road though and nor should inexperienced riders that don't know how to handle horses like this.

I will always thank drivers/bikers for slowling down, but some deserve a bl00dy hoof in the head. I had a bus driver on a country lane pass at 50 on Saturday on what is not even a full 2 lane road. Flyer is great in traffic, but she spooked and spun around because of it. It happens, horses are animals and they can get scared. As a rider, you just have to be calm and as a driver...just slow down a bit, it's a few seconds out of your day...is it really that important that you go so fast past that you could potentially cause a nasty accident?

Anyway, rant over. I wish all horse riders would thank good drivers/riders, but I don't have those people as friends!

All horses are doing well that were in the lorry. Flyer and Trevor are fine

Yeah George said. She has some paperwork she has to fill out today I think. I'm just really glad it's worked out for her.

Tw*t it off the rev limiter and shower them in gravel, might as well show them due consideration in return.

See quite a few horses around here though and got to say probably 75%+ are pleasant and wave thanks when you go past sensibly.

Most of ours are pleasant - just that one and a couple of riders without horses who refused to budge on a single track
