Default Getting Back on the Horse

Good Morning All

Well im thinking of getting a new bike after my beloved SV650S was written off 6 months ago.

July 2nd 2010 on a trip to work at 7:12am I had a massive bike crash well so im told as I dont remember it or the first 4 days in hospital.

I came off around 60-70mph was told I was over taking could not make it back into the lane in time so clipped the centre island and that sent me flying off and in the end a kind lamp post stopped me.

Anyway after 4 blood transfusions (thank you doners), a major operation to repair my totally shattered right thigh with a metal bar holding the leg together and a fractured pelvis im still here.lol

Needless to say my partner and family are now fully against me riding again, I have been riding on a full license for 8 years and its my first ever accident just a shame was a bad one and i fully beleive it was due to me still being half asleep when i left home but i will never know as I cant remember.

I had protected no claims so have them still left.

I have been thinking of a supermoto or a naked SV just dont know when as my leg is still growing the missing bone back and i have a slight limp and well the family will kill me.lol

How many other people have had big crashes and how long till you got back on the sadle?

Cheers, made it out alive yeah thats the main thing, plus if i had never had the accident I would not of got pneumonia in the hospital and without all that i would never have known that i have a lung disease so the hospital say the accident could have been a blessing.lol

Although I could do without this shattered thigh bone.lol

17 weeks, admittedly on a twist and go to start with, but then I couldn't move my left knee at all.

Cheers Mark.

I've had 3 big accidents that required hospitalisation and the longest I've been without a bike since I was 20 is 6 months. I'm a lot slower these days than I used to be.

only you will know mentally when your ready, but listen to the medical staff re ability, a few more months off a bike now may give you much better future prospects.

Accidents happen, ur hear to tell the tale and learn, what more can you ask.

I broke my thumb a year or two ago and I still get the comments, why are you still riding,

easy, its a passion.

Buy whatever your heart wants, take it easy and build your strength back up and enjoy this aspect of life again.

All the best

alex

Don't rush, you will more than likely find your confidence has taken a big knock so what ever bike you choose just build up slowly till it returns.
As far as choice of a bike is concerned buy with comfort as a priority over other attributes because you will find that you will ache for a long time after being given the all clear to ride again
Good luck

Had a bit of an off 3 years ago. Split my pelvis open (now held together with a metal plate) & broke my back.
I was in hospital for 2 weeks, but off work for 4.5 months whilst I learnt to walk again.
I actually picked my current SV650 up whilst still on crutches & rode from the other side of Derby to Crewe with my son following behind in the car. I had to be helped off at the other end when I got home & I'm not afraid to say that I was absolutely bricking myself.
2 years later I bought a track bike & started racing. I crashed at high speed in my 2nd race & cracked a couple of ribs, but I still continued with test days for a year before selling my track bike, so the fear can be overcome.
I'm still very nervous in the rain when riding, but I just can't leave biking alone, it's my drug.

A friend said to me that you can die crossing the road, plus, read what Talan wrote in Fast Bikes magazine
