Default Visiting the Lake District - Recommendations

The girlfriend and I are looking to get away this May Bank Holiday and I am looking at the Lake District as a possible location to unwind for the long weekend.

Can anyone recommended any guesthouses, and location to stay. Close to sites as well.

The bike will be staying at home, and so public transport will be used to get there.

All recommendations, would be greatly appreciated.

Train to Windermere. Plenty of B&B's/hotels to choose from. From there you can take a boat up to Ambleside, or down to Lakeside(not much there). There's also the ferry across the lake to Sawrey, and some decent easy walking on that side of the lake. The mountain goat mini buses supplement the local bus company and will get you off the beaten track a bit more.

The Britannia Inn at Elterwater is a crackin' pub in a village. It's up the Langdale valley from Ambleside. There's B&B in the pub and also in a seperate building across the village green. Been there many times, never had anything other than a good time.

before I opened this I was going to say don't go on a Bank Holiday because it will be mobbed.

But I'm too late for that advice. Its still a beautiful place to go thought.
