Question Swarf on top of valves

I hope someone can point me in the right direction with this one...

Had problems at the end of the season with the rear carb overflowing. Serviced carb and replaced - same problem.

Put bike away for winter and decided this morning to check carb again.

After finding no problems with the carb shone a torch down fuel intake on rear cylinder. There appears to be metal swarf on the top of the valves!!!

Does anyone know where this may have come from?? Next steps???

Don't quote me on this but could it be a problem with your fuel tap leaking letting through fuel? I'm sure I heard this was a problem on the carb(curveys).

As for the metal on the valves I have no idea. Never been insude that part of an engine, hope it isn't your engine getting munched up!

I would be doing a bit of stripping to ascertain exactly what there is sat there.

Not wanting to teach my granny to suck eggs, but you obviously don't want debris falling through. and you need to find where it has come from.

In a different life I did work for an vehicle builder, it is not unknown for swarf to be lodged in intakes and only moved once the engine is put into service.

Are you absolutely sure it's metal swarf, and not just some carbon deposits? There's really nowhere for this to come from, unless it's been dropped down the inlet port whilst playing with the carb...

Try a "Blob of BlueTak" FIRMLY held on to the end of a knitting needle and carefully try to extract a piece of the debris to ascertain what it could be??

Update - further investigation found carbon on top of valves, presumably caused by running very rich due to a rusted choke cable and spring.

Also found that the float gasket was shot - replaced this and no more carb leaks!

Thanks for your help everyone!
