middle lane riders

i realise i may well sound like an old part but is it just me or has anyone else noticed the amount of bikers who now ride in the middle lane of motorways when the road is almost empty,i assumed it was due to the amount of car drivers who have a bike as a toy and feel the need to still sit in the middle lane,as they do,or it was due to them riding bmw gs's and being oblivous to all other mere mortals,but my faith was shattered today early this morning on the m40,very little traffic on the motorway i was toodling as my engine warmed up when i picked up the headlights in my mirror a long way back in the middle lane,a couple of miles later still in the middle lane shock horror a pointy slowly rolled past,i raised my hand and was ignored,and he carried on for the next 10 miles sitting in the middle lane,can any one explain why?

I suppose if there's no-one else on the motorway the middle lane is as good as any to sit in.

But in the main I'd go with Mav's response of "he's a twonk".

He's the furthest possible distance away from any potential hazards that may come unexpectedly from his left or right, making it a safer ride for him?! Who knows?

If I'm in the car and some idiot is driving in the middle lane I sometimes naughtily undertake to try and highlight a point. The most annoying thing is when they flash you for doing this though! Morons. If the motorway is curving to the left, why should I use up more petrol by taking the longer path and overtaking the fool. I know it's minimal but it's the principal.

I remember years ago, we were riding to a rally on a Friday night, it must have been years ago because the motoway was empty. There were quite a few of us in our group.

Then in the distance was a car all on its todd in the middle lane.

As we got close the group split and rode either side of the car and then slowed to his speed. And then we all stared at the driver

Must have been quite intimidating, but we found it funny

I hate the middle lane on mways, ive gotta watch out for tw4ts trying to kill me from lanes either side of me, whereas if in lane 1 or 3 ive only gotta be worried about them coming from one side.

Perfectly true Mr Special, the central reservation isn't going to jump out at you.

Perhaps he had no special driving skills, just an average driver. You know, a middle of the road sort of bloke.

did a bike safe cse last year, instructor said to always ride in the outside lane (gets less use, no ruts,more grip) just keep an eye in the mirrors

I have always found that rider at the exact speed of "fast as I dare will let me get away without getting banned" taking almost all possible gaps and opportunities within that criteria has less idiots trying to kill you than a "just bimbling" pace.

+1, driving at or under the speed limit on the motorway is lethal, so i don't do it, drive on motorways that is
