Default SV worth more it bits.

Ive been looking for part prices so i can get an idea of how much its going to cost me to build a custom sv from scratch, but so far it looks like i would be better off buying a complete running bike.

ive found frames cheap enough with v5 but by the time u start adding engine wheels, forks, carbs and tank,spindals,brakes ect it cost a bloody fortune.

i could just modify mine but theres no fun it that. i want to bulid one, adding every component myself.

so i guess im now really looking for a crashed sv that someones wife/mother wants out the way asap and cheap as chips.

Definitely cheaper to start with a running bike than build from parts.

If I was doing this again I'd spend a few more quid and get as good a donor bike as you can.

My project bike was neglected rather than crashed, but if I'd spent a few hundred quid more on the original bike I would probably have saved cash. I spent a fair bit of time and money sorting out maintenance issues, plus I would have got more for the bits I sold on if they were in better condition. That's not to mention the parts that went straight into the bin because they were too far gone.

If you strip the bike down you're still going to have the satisfaction of putting it all back together and knowing every nut & bolt has passed through your hands, if that's the kind of project you're after.

With hindsight I did mine the wrong way round - stripped it down and then did all the mods during the rebuild. IMO you'd be better doing the major/custom mods first to a running bike so you can road test them and iron out niggles.

Then strip it for paint/powdercoat, and rebuild adding any further "bolt-on" parts/minor mods as you go.

my sv is a very early curvy but its too good to mess about with at present as its in pretty good nick for a 12 year old bike, BUT i think i need to stop kidding myself as its not a classic with rising value,its budget bike that cost £4.5k new and worth at best £1300 now, im going to keep my options open as i want a winter project, but if/when i do drop mine then its a perfect candiate for the job.

I think im just finding it hard to change something that, imo is already perfect.

ive just got my license back after having it updated (out of date for 14 months) so going to test ride some newer bikes and then see how perfect i think my trusty old suzuki really is.

My seperate frame, engine build stands me at around £350 but I have been lucky on parts i.e. engine £50, frame £40, shock (GSXR1000) £10, GSXR front end £50, Wheels, rad, loads of other bits £150 inc decent set of tyres, calipers free, rear subframe free, tank free, indicators free, undertray 99p, battery £5, loom free, coils free, carbs free, airbox free, lockset £10. Mine is now ready to run

otherwise it is an expensive do.

Thought you would have realised by now that the SV IS A £20,000 BIKE,that is if you had to buy every item in its make-up at spares prices.

i think if im gonna do what i want to do ill have to just take my time and wait for that perfect moment and pick up some bargain bits. what HH has done is my plan exactly.
