Default Things I can miss out in a service?

I have a V-Max 1200. It's due it's 8k service but I'm tight on dosh so was wondering how important these things are to do:

-Change the brake and clutch fluid

-Fit new brake and clutch master cylinder and caliper/release cylinder seals

-Fit new brake and clutch hoses

-Fit new fuel hoses

-Change front fork oil

And also, where do people go to get their parts cheap? Eg I need final drive oil, and am happy to buy things like new hoses if people could recommend a good website or something?

Thanks in advance Yorkie_Chris!

Service schedules are designed for those that don't have the knowledge to know when things actually need changing/replacing, you are free to ignore some and indeed all recomendations for items to be services on the provision you are able to check these parts are still good and aren't degrading, if of course you aren't able to do that, then you're likely to end up with a unreliable bike with various parts failing (apparently) unexpectedly.

I'd suggest as a minimum you check all the items on the schedule and if in any doubt change them, generally if the manufacturer has specified something "out of the ordinary" is because that particular model requires it, although they do air on the side of caution I'm not sure I'd want to take chances to save a few bob.

wemoto will do most seals at reasonable prices.

Cheers Mark.

imo all fluids are a must as they degrade quite rapidly with usage. Hoses can be inspected. Seals im unsure of as my m/c cylinder seals are due for renewal this service.

Im also interested in peoples thoughts on how easy it is to grease your head bearings? they were replaced by the previous owner 16k ago and require lubricating.

+1 to Andy, all fluids.

Then, for me, one of the most important things is the things that make you stop in a hurry - brakes.

Then the things that make you go... like spark plugs...

SPARK PLUGS, why on earth do some folks change them at 4k! surely they are going to last 12k plus even if they are standard ones never mind the flash ones?

A have another question for you boffins- can you explain to me what "brake and clutch master cylinders AND caliper/release cyclinder seals" are/do?

If I am to replace them I want to make sure I'm buying the right ones off the net. Thanks!

Good morning all.

Hydraulic seals have to withstand the pressure from the hydraulic fluid, when the system is in operation.

As said, it's better to inspect the items in question, & replace them only if required. For the record, my 1999 Diversion 900 has done 172k, & is on it's original hoses, caliper seals, & master cylinder seals, & it still stops!
The calipers have been cleaned & lubricated regularly, & the brake fluid has been changed annually.

If replacement the seals is required I would use genuine ones. As with most things there are some dubious quality parts out there.

Cheers.

Spark plugs will easily do 12k in the average 4 stroke bike, car, van.
Out of all the vehicles I've owned, there's been a lot, Ive never had a single spark plug failure at that mileage.

I used to maintain my own vehicles so know that for definite.

To be really harsh, if you dont know what they are/do, you should not even consider replacing them yourself.
