Anyone in need of a 3 metre steel RSJ?
If so and you are able to pick up this week from Dartford, make me an offer. Bought 2 for two walls being removed and the building inspector only wanted us to put one in - go figure! Cheers... |

Did the building inspector actually do any design, or did he just eye it in?
Obviously he's seen it, but if it's a cavity wall, or 215 wide you shouldn't really have more than 1/3 unsupported. |

Secondly, it's not the building inspectors job to change anything regarding structural loads, he's there to enforce that the beams and the removal of the wall are carried out to the calcs done by a structural engineer. Building inspectors are not authorised to make these decisions, that's why 3rd party structural calculations are required, this takes away any risk from the building control office. So I'm suprised he's made this call, unless the op hasn't mentioned everything, hey I'm only a rough ass builder so know very little about the calculation side of things, but I can size a beam up by looking at any job knowing what I'd put in would be at least bigger than the calcs would require and so would the BCO, but I wouldn't take the risk without a calc as back up. Thats what I was worried about. Sounds like an engineers done some calcs for 2 beams, and the inspectors told him to put one in......which would be odd in my experience.
Yeah, an 8" beam would be wide enough for a 9" wall, but if he'd brought 2No. 178x102's for a 225 wall but only put one in, then there could be issues. Any way, he's trying to sell it, not asking for help so I'll butt out. |

Like you say the op is selling the spare beam so I'll butt out too, good luck with the sale, might be worth putting the actual sizes of it btw |
