Morning organ's !
to all those MTB folk if you had £500 to spend on a bike what would you buy it needs to be complete and good enough to be ridden by a 6ft novice that will give it a good thrashing it will be going places like dalby forest and such (When we organise the next ride) currently found a almost new Cube Acid ? any good... owenski was thinkin it may be best to build one but will be made from decent no named parts? any other suggestions? Tom.

I can't see building one with decent bits being economic tbh, a friend of a friend got a virtually new £1200 mtb for £500.
Guy had bought it, used it a couple of times then got bored, then after a while decided to sell it. IMO you'll get a lot better specced 2nd hand bike for that money than you ever will new. Trawl the forums, eBay etc, there is bargains in abundance. |

Yeah you've totally mis-quoted/misunderstood me there tomski, I said:
"You'd always get a better bike by building one" - this been the very expensive option, I also said "for £500 you'll get a bike that'll do the job but the parts will be none branded" To elaborate none branded to me doesnt just mean its not made by hope or hayes but more importantly it means if any element of the shock for example fails then you're buying a new shock rather than a replacement element. Phils spot on though, if you're willing to do it there are plenty of 2nd hand bargains out there, but you mentioned the ride to work thingy which I'd have assumed wouldnt cover ebay buys. |

Looking at this Cube Acid, http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Cube-Acid-Mo...aign=Froogle01
The spec seems very reasonable if you're able to get that for £500, but... BE CAREFUL The manufacuturers dont always deceide what goes on thier frames, its the retailer so this one may be showing some poploc 100mm rocksohx but the retailer you use may prefer to fit some cheaper indy's' you'll end up with the same frame but all auxillaries could be totally different. Where were you planning on buying it from? |

Dart 3's on a £700+ bike!?!? Thats shocking, but then Cube probably charge £650 for the blasted frame ha ha.
Like said, shop around! A good bike to look at imo would be a Boardman FS (FS = Full Suspension), or any of their MTB's. The FS was £850 new (for lower spec bike) but it has some VERY nice parts on considering its price, its got the parts you would expect on a bike costing almost twice as much! So keep an eye out on Ebay or whatever and you'll get a steal! EDIT; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Boardman-2...#ht_802wt_1139 Similar spec to the Cube for much less! Well, we were talking about going into the peak district for a go out, so if we sort that out and you have a bike to ride it would be grand to get out there!!!

Specialized Hardrock Sport - £500 will get you that with spare cash.
Have you looked at the bike-to-work scheme? |

You get a lot of bike for the money as Specialized fit a lot of their own make kit onto the bikes which is very good stuff and does what it should do . Last edited by xXBADGERXx; 30-08-11 at 10:29 PM. |

Have a look at Giant, they make a lot of frames for other companies and their own stuff tends to be top notch, but very reasonably priced.
I have had my Giant for a long while now and love it to bits, mind you I spent a tad too much on it, so it has full XT, hopes and a splattering of Titanium and Carbon. The way to do it is buy the bike with the best frame you can afford and then as parts wear out replace them with better spec kit. |
