Minitwin - Elka Shock Position - Contains Photos

Good evening, all..

I've been working on my SV, getting it ready for the coming season. I recently bought a well setup 06 model for a bargain price from a guy who has moved to Australia, but I'm busy getting it how I want.

The bike was built by JHS Racing (in Bristol) about 5 years ago, and it's been fitted with an Elka piggyback shock. However, the reservoir is alarmingly close to the rear cylinder's downpipe. I know it's a full race exhaust, but surely the reservoir shouldn't be within about 3mm of touching the can! I'm a little concerned about this as the performance of the rear shock will deteriorate massively over a short space of time.

Someone has actually put a few zip ties around it and the subframe, presumably to make sure vibrations and/or shock compression don't result in them touching.

The following are of the actual exhaust system. I know it's a full race system, but I'm not sure which manufacturer it is. The can is an M4 slip on spring mount, but I get the feeling the downpipes may be Hindle. Hopefully someone can identify the style from the photos.





Has anyone else encountered this? I did search around Google and even the forum, and came across a post about a Nitron rear shock, but not much of worth.

Bit of advice on this would be lovely. Aiming to get out for a test session in the next 3 or 4 weeks before hitting Mallory in February with Thundersport for their pre-season test.

if the bikes been run this way then thers probley no issue with it, best bet would be to maby give jhs a call

if there is room you could always put some of that exhaust tape what ever its called round the exhaust nearest the shock to keep the heat away from it

I'd lag it too.

If the exhaust springs allow you could also trim off some of the rear pipe where it meets the cylinder head too. 5mm would see it lead away from the shock. But of course, make sure that there's enough play in the rest of the pipe to take up the difference.

Thanks for the replies. I've since had it confirmed that the exhaust system is indeed Hindle as it's 52mm diameter and runs straight, directly under the sump. The connection on the M4 can is 57mm OD. I tried getting in touch with JHS Racing today, but their staff were reluctant to put me through to one of their mechanics or technicians, simply asked for some photographs e-mailing across. I'll fire an email their way tomorrow and hope they can shed some light on it. Seems like a poor design if that's how it's meant to be.

Should probably crack on with getting the subframe changed and battery moved to the front cylinder!

Someof the guys I race with have the same issues with the hindle but only if running an Elka piggyback. I thought I heard he made a different pipe section for those running Elka's. Maybe someone local could take that section and cut reroute it slightly and reweld to give clearance.

Hello, the problem here is the exhaust, the Elka shock was manufactured to fit the standard stock machine with no issues, when we fit the sv650 with the M4 full race system there are no issues, but Hindle pipework does not use the rear cylinder stub pipe which is standard on the sv650 thus the bend on the pipework is not enough to clear the shock reservoir on the Elka shock. We can offer a differant shock head for this fitment if required.

That's the exact response I was hoping for, thanks for clearing that one up. Well it does explain why it's so close. Out of interest, just how badly will the shock's characteristics be affected by the heat? Presumably the bike was originally supplied with the M4 system when it left your workshop.

It would be ideal if the shock could be modified as an alternative to chopping up the exhaust.

The, heat from the pipe would allow the boiling of the oil and the gas would expand in the body and damping would be greatly effected.
The bike would had been fitted with the M4 full system when we built it.
