Default Didn't think a new tyre would make so much difference.

Just had the rear tyre replaced. The one the bike came with was a different make from the front, a bit squared off anyway and had developed an annoying slow puncture. Finally spotted the little bit of metal that had caused it, buried barely visible in the side, so I figured it was time for a new one.

It now has a nice Pirelli to match the front and it's effing awesome. I don't know if it's the fact they weren't a proper pair before or the fact it was squared but it now feels like a completely new bike. I was expecting the back to feel happier but the whole bike feels better balanced. I had the best ride ever back from the garage.

Is there anything else similarly simple/cheap I can do that will have such an effect?

take it easy for the first hundred miles or so until the tyres are scrubbed in though, releasing agent can be a bitch

Noted. Although TBH my idea of a great ride and some others one this site may be slightly different! And 100 miles could take a while...

A new tyre is always an excuse to go for a long ride to get the bugger scrubbed

The trumpet came with a new pair of boots so I took it from Oldham to Bridlington, in about 90 mins, then enjoyed more twisty roads on the way home, still need to lean more
