Default Newbie Questions

Starting Minitwins this year. Bike nearly preped.

1. 520 Chain conversion?
What length would i need and is 'X' or 'O' ring better?
Suggestions for sprocket sizes? (i ill be running most of the Bemsee rounds)
Best place to buy from?

2. Brake Pads.
Other than PF pads (quite costly) what other makes (and model) would you suggest?

Cheers for your help

Leigh,

I'm new to it myself but have had it on good authority all tracks will be covered by 14,15 / 44,45,46. I have ran 14/45 at cadwell and for my limited abilities that was fine

As for pads, I am running the PF95's so can't really help

See you at Snetterton !

Where did you get them from and what length of chain is it?
Thanks for your reply

Sprockets you need to run may well depend on conditions and change on each day (although not very likely).

If wind changes direction you may fun you're running out of steam in a gear you don't want to be, at a place you want the poiwer so it's a case of having a feel during practice sessions and getting it right afterwards.

The ones suggested above will get you for all tracks Bemsee run I believe.

You'll be wanting the o-ring less chain. O-rings and X-rings sap power (all half a horse power of it)

I was too lazy to change from 15/45 all last year, although we did keep a 14 front and a 44 & 46 rear in the spares box.

Got a bit 'redliney' at Snetterton so maybe should have put the 44 on the rear then but for Cadwell and Brands (Indy & GP) it worked pretty well for me while I was trundling around mid-pack-ish.

Have to agree that PF pads are scarey expensive, never tried them but been told they are the best. I've used a few sets of SBS pads which are nearly half the price and I like them a lot. Loads of feel and power to lift the back wheel at will. They last me around 3 or 4 weekends. Don't forget the rest of the braking system needs to be top spec too (although don't go putting a brembo master cylinder on the bike!) just keep everything clean and moving freely. I've got Galfer wavy disks on my bike too and they probably help quite a bit over standard.

Always used an O ring or X ring 520 - wondered where that 0.5bhp went too! Whatever chain you use, keep it clean, remove muck before lubing it again as it's so easy to loose a lot more than 0.5bhp with a knackered dirty chain. Keep it slightly slack too - especially Cadwell where the suspension moves quite a bit.
