powder coating is crap! I do wheels with industrial grade paint and use matting agents to get desired matt or satin finishes.

Powder coating lifts and has an orange peely effect to it, whereas paint lays flatter and gives far superior finishes.

How would you prep wheels, rub down to smooth paint then paint over, rub down/shot blast to bare metal, then prime & paint?

(I know that's very simplistic, but I'm thinking of DIY and whether a rub down to get the wheel fairly smooth then lash on some smooth Hammerite would actually be OK - I know it won't be perfect)

If you're looking for a diy job then your best bet would be to prep them with 180 grade paper, thoroughly degrease them then once clean get some aerosol etch primer, upol acid 8 is an ok one to use, spray that on, let it cure, flat it back really lightly with 1000grade then you can hammerite over the top, it wont look great and isn't professional but should give you an idea

Fail in that you could save some pennies and bring them to me :P
