Default Triumph when will they learn to build them

i know this may be the wrong forum for this,
but since there are more triumph owner on here then sv owners
then i thought i would vent my disgust with triumph build quality
and enginering, the story goes like this ,ring mates up to sort out run
on easter monday to the southend shakedown, one friend with a old
but low milage triumph thunderbird 900 took bike for mot,(i doubt it clocks more then 500miles between mots)and the sprag clutch needs to be repaired/replaced,best part of a grand, seems this is a very common problem on most of the triumph triples including the early speed triples, with parts costing mega money, and triumph not selling the spring on its own even if this is the only part that is needed, and its a engine out job,and looking on the net it a problem that even effects the newer 1050 although i think it is easer to get at,have in the past thought about getting a sprint to replace the vfr one day,but doudt it would ever happen now or that the triumph engine would last as long as the well thrashed honda engine, and that honda engine is likely to out last me,and expect it to still be going strong at 100k if not 200k
so rant over, but still trying to convince my mate to come on monday and borrow my very old high milage never ever rebuilt bandit 600
and no im not anti made in britain, just anti buying crap

My old speed fours been rock solid so far but that's the problem with anecdotal evidence, some people get bad ones some people get good ones, same with any manufacturer.

any internet or triumph forum search seem to say it a very common problem, exacerbated by trying to start them with a less then perfectly charged battery, and since triumph have done several different mods and versions to try and solve the problem,it dont seem like anecdotal evidence, seems like crap enginering and triumph selling you the whole sprag clutch unit for over a grand when all that might be needed is a spring that people are sourcing from oil seals and the like

Each to his own. Most bikes have inherent faults if you check all the sites but the majority of the time avoidable with proper maintenance.
500 miles a year between MOT's is hardly going to keep a battery fully charged unless plugged into an optimate or such. I believe you can fit a heavier sprag with a little fettling, can't remember where I read about it.

yes that is almost true! most dont cost over 1k to fix,and theres no long term fix for this problem, just repair and hope, and most faults on modernish bikes are more down corrosion and stale petrol, and none of the bikes i own(and there are several) have any real inherent engine problems to speek of,maybe the odd reg/rec or corrosion on th PC board

I've personally done over 900,000 miles on hinkley Triumphs over the years including a 900 T'bird sport, a couple of the 599cc ones and many S3's/t595/daytona 955i's, one gearbox problem and a blown ECU being the only major issues, I'd say that's pretty good.

but then if you want to rant about specific manufactures I've had problematic, Honda's/suzuki's/Norton/bsa/yamaha's and probably several others in the past, search long enough I'm sure you'll find a horror story or three about anything, whilst it's true Triumph do a few "buy the whole assembly" type things (the classic being the speedo magnet, same design as the SV, but you can't buy it separately, so £129), they are cheap on other things (head gasket on the 955i triple is £34).

Cheers Mark.

All fair enough, lots of bike makes and models have their own issues but the one thing I can't understand is why Triumph can't make the required spring available for purchase on it's own when it seems such a frequent issue.....

look on any bike specific forum and youll find a common fault

lots of SV cant ride in the rain without a fender extender, pointies blow ignition coils for a laugh, the reg/rec is made of fine china, and the paint falls off at the first sign of salt & water

under the logic in this thread i must conclude that all suzukis are of poor build quality

dont even get me started on bmw

I think rictus post sums up hinkley built triumphs very well

tbh if this forum does having a lot of triumph owners then a thread posted purely to take a pop at the triumph brand comes across as an angry man looking for a fight just as it would if posted on a triumph forum
