Unhappy Restricted License Penalties - Help.

Okay guys, I'm at a total loss!

Having passed my test at 19 y/o I immediately bought my K6 SV650s, restricted it like a good little boy and I've been riding around like that for about a year and a half now. The issue now comes that my friend is selling his old VFR 800. I know it's in good nick and he's planning to sell it for peanuts!

My difficulty is how the hell can I test ride one? I went to a few of my local dealers all of which denied me for a test ride because it was against policy or I wasn't 21 or they simply didn't have a restriction kit.

I was wondering what sort of legal penalty I would be subject to if I did take out my friends VFR 800 for a test and was pulled over?

Anyone with any experience dealing with the Police on a restricted license?

Why do you need to test ride it if "I know its in good nick"?
As for your question, just dont do it.You would be unlicenced and uninsured, and you have just posted on a public forum about doing it so there would be no mitigation either.Sorry officer I didnt realise------I think not.

Some will argue that they never check, and I think 9/10 times that's true. I know many people who have or are getting away with it, but also one that got caught. Maybe he will take you pillion to a private road?

That's a good shout. Find a big old super market car park late at night. Ok, it's not gonna give you a proper feel for it, but you should be able to have a bash. AFAIK, since it's private property the only crime could possibly be trespassing if you were asked to leave.

That's how I view it too. Near me, we have a huge MOD facility and if you ask them nicely they would let you ride mini motos at your own risk. I have ridden a lot of my mates bikes there as it's a private (MOD) road. Few good corners and a decent straight too.

Tesco on a Sunday when they shut would be my shout its not worth the risk on the road you would loose your licence over a twenty minute blast.

you need to be legal anywhere that has public access

to be 'private' usually means there has to be a gate to stop other people getting in

so tescos car park is no better than on the road

I see what you're saying. I once argued with a woman when I was walking my dog who was saying I was on private land. It was just off a public footpath and there were no signs or gates to indicate any transition to private property. I still walk my dog there.

If your main concern is the mechanical functioning of the bike, get one of the more experienced folks from the .org to take it for a blat. Quite a lot of us have legal minimum cover for riding other people's bikes. If you want to know whether you will like, it there's no reasonable way for you to find out because it'll take more than a quick tour of the car park to decide.

But if the price is that good, buy it and park it at the back of the garage connected to a maintenance charger. When your restriction is up it's yours, and if you don't like it you'll probably get your money back when you sell it.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.

P.S. I've got one. They're comfy to ride, but the servicing costs can be a bit steep.
