Default Which chain and sprockets and gearing ? K6

The time has come for new chain and sprockets for the SV650K6 and so I'm looking for recommendations and info. I don't mind paying a little bit extra for good quality as I intend to keep this bike for a few years.

My pick for the moment is the Renthal standard front sprocket, anodised rear sprocket and alpha X-ring gold chain. I believe that Renthal are good quality and X-ring chains perform well. I also like the idea of an anodised rear sprocket and gold chain for the bling aspect. The whole deal costs £135 at Motorcycle Race Parts.

I'd like to know of any alternatives that will perform as well or better for the same price or less. So if any of you can direct me to the same gear for less money or another brand that will perform as well or better for the same or less cost I'd be very grateful.

However, my main question is whether to remain with standard gearing or whether to go one tooth less at the front and one tooth more at the rear. This would allow me to keep the chain length standard and therefore easily return to standard gearing if I wanted to at a later date.

I much prefer the feeling of good acceleration, particularly out of the corners, rather than straight line speed so I'm seriously considering lowering the final drive gearing but before I do I'd love to hear from other riders who have done this and how they feel about it.

Any help, recommendations, suggestions, feedback etc. is greatly appreciated.

Hi mate.

Last week i fit the Tsubaki Alpha Chain on mine, but went the other way in terms of sprockets; dropping a tooth on the back ASWELL as going up on on the front.
I commute to work on the motorway so i went for cruising at lower rpm's, and honestly.. i won't ever be changing back, i haven't noticed a thing in acceleration, and the cruising RPM has dropped significantly.

For example, in 6th gear, i could do 70mph at exactly 6k rpm, where as now it'll do the same speed, same circumstances, but at 4.7k rpm... And as before, no noticeable change to the acceleration.

The alpha seems to be a good chain, and i went with both steel sprockets front and back. JT i think are the brands.

Dont p#ss about. I got my whole kit from wemoto. If you want to improve your bikes accelaration / decelaration then do a tps adjustment. You can tell I dont get all of this 1 tooth sprocket adjustment thing!

Aluminum sprockets, anodized or not, are great for racers looking to save bits of weight, but they don't really last very long compared to good quality steel.

How many miles do you do and what sort of roads and stuff?

Ally sprockets are crap. Don't last 2 minutes, waste of space.

The tsubaki alpha chain is pretty good... but I don't believe the X ring hype and think you're better with an O ring one and a scottoiler.

Gearing... depends on the use. I used to really like my silly low geared setup for shennanigans on gnarly twisties. However it was a pain in the tits on a cruise, holding 95mph or so took commitment.

Thanks for replies guys

Mileage is around 5k-6k per year. I rarely use the bike to commute, except when I intend to get out for a ride immediately after work in the nice weather. My riding is purely recreational with a strong bias towards twisty roads away from urban areas. I like to ride quickly through the twistys and don't really care about going stupid fast in straight lines, hence I don't mind sacrificing top speed for acceleration.

I hear you on the 'ally sprox are crap' and I'm beginning to think sod the bling and go for steel for the longevity.

Just need to make a decision on final drive gearing and X ring or O ring chain.

Near the bottom and cheaper.

I have a SV650 SK6 (see pic) and made a note that the final drive was 15/44, can anybody confirm this?

I'm finding that Wemoto supply 15/45 as standard, maybe this is for the naked version of the SV K6 but i'm a tad confused and can't be arsed counting the teeth on the rear.
