Default SV650SX curvy loud popping at idle

Hey guy's,

I've got a SV650SX 1999 and it keeps popping really loudly on idle, usually that's when there is unburnt fuel in the exhaust.

has anyone had this problem with the curvy or know what could be causing it?

Thanks in advance.

Is it an exhaust noise? If yes, then it's weak at the bottom end - a weak mixture results in slow combustion and is thus still burning when arriving in the exhaust often causing a popping sound. Weak could mean an intake leak, or carb blockage/obstruction.

Not too sure, i started her up no problems there then all of a sudden almost instantly you can hear it pop really loud, then say 15 seconds it will do it again and it's almost constant every 15 seconds will pop loudly and it pops a bit when do a bit of throttle.

What Sid said. You could look at the plugs and know right off what sort of idle mixture you have.

Not until you find out exactly what's wrong, no.

If looking at the plugs shows that one is lean at idle and the other OK, you know where to look for an intake leak, around the rubber boot for the lean cylinder. If nothing there, try adjusting the idle mixture richer. (Big PITA because of the adjustment screw location.) If adjusting the screw doesn't give you a richer mixture, put the mixture screw back where it was and check the idle jet for obstructions.

Yeah id go with checking the plugs.

I had a popping problem on mine a few years ago. Had to check all the lines, rubbers etc were sealed properly.

Youve just got to go through the stages until you find something

Eventually found that the garage had messed with my idle mixture screw. Yours is unlikely to be that though if nobodys touched it

Well considering it's had like 10 previous owners I've no idea what anyone's done to it.

I've decided that after I've finished insulating and boarding the garage the bikes going to get stripped, forks and tank to be powder coated, carbs out stripped and cleaned, full service ect you know how it goes.

I want this SV to last and live well so in order for that it's got to have some treatment!

I think they're worth it. I'm going to try hard to make mine last a long time.
