Default dead bike (battery?) thread

Got a used 13 model. Fair bargain. Seemed fairly well taken care of, bloke said he couldnt ride much with busted knee in last 3 years so only done 1000 miles over last 3 years. Got it last month 20th Feb, around there.

Anyway got my licence yesterday so couldnt test it much before hand, just round the block and seemed alright. so did some servicing, spark plugs, oil filter, oil and air filter. Last weekend the battery died so I charged it up after borrowing a mates charger and the bike fired up sounded good for 15minutes, so turned it off and left it for the week as I knew my licence was yesterday.

Today I go on it’s first ride. Ride for about 10mins to get the feel round the roads nearby, get back home to meet a friend with his bike. Stop the bike. Start it up fine all is well. Get about 10minutes up the road and the bike starts spluttering and dying and the dashboard completely dead. Try bump start it and it started and got about 10 meters up the road and dead.

Thought it was the battery again so friend got his car and took me to Halfords, got new battery. Installed it and bike fired right up. Thought great all fixed. Got to his place to pick up his bike again. fired up perfectly fine after that 10min ride to his place, so happy days.. or so I thought.. So we set off. 15minutes later stop again for fuel. Bike is dead wont start up. Seems battery is dead again. Bump start it thinking maybe we will get her home but get about 20meters and it’s completely dead.

I guess the bike is not charging the battery while riding. Could a new battery be bad? What would most likely culprit be?

Regulator/Rectifier, hopefully someone will come along soon with the workshop manual pages relevant to also testing the stator/AC side

ok thanks for the response mate, ill check that out.

Out of curiosity, I checked ebay for a replacement. I got the sv650s model, Looking for replacement parts seems hard. I dont really know which one would be best if this is the problem part. There are some up for like £30-40 then some for like £150. So im blown away at the options and difference in price.

get a multimeter - charge the battery and start the bike. on revving the bike the voltage across the battery should rise (use 20V DC scale). if it dosent the rectifier or Alternator would be favourite . Switch off the bike put the meter on Amps (10A scale) and connect it in series with one lead from the battery. There should be no, or very little current flow. If there is then the battery is discharging possibly through a faulty rectifier.
Multimeter's are on sale at Lidl cheap about now.
I have tested diode packs (rectifiers) and alternators on bikes and cars but not on a SV. There will be generic instructions on the web (ytube) i am sure

Others on here may have more specific knowledge.

These are the plugs at the R/R

Tried to embed this but I cant figure it out.
Is this the regulator rectifier? Stripped the back end fairings off. To get ready for testing but I was expecting it to look like a heat sink sort of?

No, they are load resistors for the fuel gauge

https://www.svrider.com/threads/70-ohm-resistor.393253/

The reg/rec does look heat sinked as you suggested: (item #5)

https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts...-sv650sal1-e24

The reg/rec location is shown here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/80...age=377#manual
not sure what model year this represents but the 2016 AL7 reg is still in the same area.

Ok I’ll have too look for it maybe it’s up front now.

I did some battery testing with the multimeter I got.

Fully charged it was at 13.02v at the off position.
Turned bike on and it dropped down to 11ish (didn’t take a proper note of it so will have to check again)
Started bike and it went up to 14.6v while idling.

When I revved the bike up to 4k rpm it dropped to 13.2-13.5v fluctuating between those. After wards it idled at 13.6v.

Does that seem normal? Looking at Chris‘s post above its outside of the measurements?

I had to do some retesting because I didnt follow the manual pages that Chris linked above.

Battery on off position: 12.99v (maybe lost some charge over the last hour and having run the bike quickly to test previously)
Ignition on with HI beam: 12.21v
Starting motor: at the start it was 12.25-12.29v fluctuating and then after 20seconds it dropped to about 12.06-12.18v fluctuating.
Revving to 5krpm: dropped to 4/5v at the lowest sitting anywhere randomly between 6-9v for the first 15seconds or so of revving the bike. after that it seemed to stabalise around 10.7v - 11.3v

back to idle, it was on 12.10v

time to find this regulator rectifier and test it and the stator

It sounds like your reg/rec has expired. Personally, I'd check the stator and if that's ok just replace the reg/rec. If it is the reg/rec you can go several different routes depending on finances - an ebay Chinese cheapie (which many swear by), an Electrex equivalent or a genuine Shindengen FH020AA (or similar).

They are (mostly) all 5 wire - 3 (ac) from the alternator (usually yellow), 2 (dc) to the battery (red/black).
