I 'spose I should say a few words...
Why did I join the BMF? http://www.bmf.co.uk/ I'm a strong believer that you shouldn't just sit and have a whinge about something if you're not prepared to do something about it (so I always vote). BMF seemed to be backing some good policies (dark visors etc.) and had some discounts available as a perk of membership. They also have a magazine, which I think is 3 monthly. I haven't really looked into any rideouts, social aspects or further involvement with them. I'm happy to throw £21 quid their way and have them do some political stirring on my behalf. I think the membership is more justified on that basis than on the goodies or freebies you get. You get a legal helpline, but I have insurance which offers that. The insurance discount on their policy still ended up being more expensive than the Norwich Union I went with. |

I was a BMF member until recently, when I decided to withdraw... the reason was due to an article in their monthly members magazine which incensed me. The article showed various pictures of bike crashes and asked the question "why are bikers still being allowed to kill themselves on our roads". The article went on to explain how the BMF believes that a majority of motorcyclists (inferring mainly sportbike riders) are a bunch of loons intent on killing themselves with the sole intention of damaging the credibility of biking in general.
No point in getting hot under the collar (even tho I want to rant!), coz I am sure a large number of well-meaning BMF members are now going to respond and tell me how wrong I am for disagreeing with this patronising tripe, but I think behaviour like this by respected organisations is condescending in the extreme. Making out that BMF members have entered some sort of motorcycling elite just for paying a subscription fee is frankly absurd. I think I'll give MAG a try now... |
