Slightly weird and embarrassing but it might help someone else

When I bought my Shoei helmet 3 months ago I was always aware that looking back over my shoulder gave me a limited ( and somewhat dangerously restricted ) view to the rear. Felt like I could not turn far enough to get a good look backwards and that the helmet aperture was the restriction. I also wear specs which restrict peripheral vision a bit.

Long ride last weekend and I discovered if I rotated the helmet over from back to front eg. lower the chin guard closer to my chest. the whole view thru' the aperture opens up considerably when turning back. Basically just a slight reposition of where my head fits in the helmet.

Maybe just a slow learner but in all seriousness...I feel much safer and a lot less reliant on my mirrors. I ve always liked to take a look back before lane changing etc...

I find that if I put my Shoei lid on backwards i look better too

Just remember guys, Lifesavers are not required when travelling at over or around 60mph, well thats what i was tod anyway

Errm... i would always do a life saver if i am changing my position in relation to other road users. If theres no bugger around, then yeah, dont do it.

But if there is traffic, id do it. You never know what mad ****er is trying to come up your inside, or attempt a last minute ditch over taking move.

Well, 'not required' is not perhaps quite was meant. The Met sergeant on my BikeSafe day reckoned that it was may have been dangerous do one when travelling fast, as that's a long way to travel at that speed without looking where you're going. Me? On balance, I'll still do one.

as long as you do it in plenty of time shouldnt be a problem but keep an eye on traffic behind all the time

That's why I always travel faster than anything else... everything is behind you.

And even the v.fast cars only catch up slowly in your mirrors.
