Default new chain and sprockets

the time has come (at the wrong time)

im in need of a new chain.
spoke to my local stealer (dealer)
they said they can fit me a new o-ring did chain and sprocket set for 190 quid

phoned about - busters has offered me an X-ring chain and sprocket set for 78 quid.

they said that x-rings are better than o rings as they last longer and more heavy duty. whats the difference between the 2 ?

think im gonna do it myself - all i need to do is - cut the old chain off, replace sprockets - put new chain on -
am i correct in believing that i can get a split link ( a temporary link) so i can ride to the dealers and get the chain fitted (i dont feel confident in using a rivetting tool )
?

any advice anyone can offer me ? never done anything like this before .

That's exactly how I planned to do it. In the end, my clip link was the wrong size for the new chain (luckily I checked it first) so I put the new sprockets on with the old chain and had the dealer cut it off and fit the new chain, and redo the alignment and tension for me. £10, bargain.

Hey mate,

The received wisdom amongst Hornet owners is that OEM sprockets are best because some of the aftermarket ones don't have the rubber mounts that the OEM ones do. This makes the bike much noisier to ride.

Also, don't go for the after-market alloy ones as the simply don't last. Make sure they're steel of hardened alloy.

Change the chain and sprocket at the same time.

For cheap OEM parts try David Silver Spares and fit 'em yourself.

If you are thinking of changing your own stuff, then, remember to undo the front sprocket nut BEFORE you cut the chain. Oh, its usualy done up very very very tight, so have a breaker bar ready etc.

Personaly, i would rather have a rig around the local bike tyre places and see what deals they have. I got my chain and sprockets supplied and fitted for £130. In my eyes, the time effoet and fannying around is worth the extra £40. But £190, is a bit steep.
