Default Motor oil (?)

Can someone help me? I'm changing the oil in my 2000 SV-650 today. I was wondering if I need to trek across town to the Bike store or if a motor oil at the local auto parts store will work.

Welcome. It does have to be oil specialy for bikes with wet clutches, but I don't see why your local auto parts store would have this.

As the furry one says, you need to get Bike oil (Shell service stations do it)

Motor oil has anti friction additives that cause havoc with the clutches on bikes.

Also, get smei synthetic or mineral, as 9/10 most garages will sell these(if you ever need to top up), where as fully synth oil is usualy only available from bike shops etc, and semi synth and synth dont mix..well, you shouldnt anyway.

fully synth oil for the sv isn't worth the extra money. Personally I would go semi

Hein Gericke do an oil, oil filter & air filter deal for £24.50



Well worth a look TBH (depending on which bike you've got... They don't list the air filter for the K3 bike yet )

If you want to be sure about the suitability of oil for wet clutches, it will have "JASO MA" somewhere on the label, along with all the other SG,SH etc and viscosity.

Not wanting to down grade any ones posts in here but i have used a normal automotive oil in all my mototrbikes since i have been riding

i got my first bike when i was 15 im now a sad old git of 39

and i`ve never had a problem with anybike clutch and oil antislip properties

personally i think its a marketing ploy to shock you into buying an oil with a sniff of tar

My reasons for thinking this are

we buy oil to enable the engine to allow all the moving parts to become lubricated with a substance that allows the fine tolerances to SLIP against each other
therefore not promoting wear as wear on an engine promotes heavy garage costs

so why would i put an oil in my bike that has an ANTI SLIP ADDITIVE ???

you say the clutch hmmm alright here we go

clutches on modern bikes are made up off plates so many steel and so many corked variety the cork type plate absorbs oil so that when its released from its grip it can slip against the steels without a detrimental effect to either plate

by its very nature or swelling Brought on by being soaked in a fluid the plates are thicker when wet

this under pressure Squeezes out the unwanted oil and allows the nonslip action of bite, wood against steel grips under pressure , this bite get tranferred into forward thrust via the gearbox

Now some folk seem to think that putting a specific oil in your motorcycle will eliminate any possible slip that may be generated through the clutch by a non specific oil

My argument here is this oil is slippery and we buy expensive oil because it is excessivly slipppery all the time under extremes of all conditions #

so why would we want some non slippery oil ???????

THE CLUTCH ON THE BIKE IS PANTS ANYWAY IF IT SLIPS WITH A GENERAL MOTOR OIL and will quite probably slip with a Specific bike oil

Just my honest opinion for what its worth

When I first got my SV I changed the oil to normal mineral motor oil in order to assist in the process of bedding in the cylinders and bores. Never had clutch slip once. When I'd done 6k miles I went over to Halfords semi-synthetic bike oil and I change it frequently.

Embee's "JASO MA" mark is probably the thing to look for and is, I suspect, present on all motor oils sold in the UK.

Now that my SV has done 22k I'm considering going over to Mobil 1. If I do, I'll post how it turns out...

The argument against your argument is the companies that develop oils know better than us as they are developing & testing with m/cycle engine components. I don't think theres a great deal of differnece in price. I also think an oil developed for motorcycle use has to be better than Halfords £1.99 motor oil (if they still do it) . Anyway I use semi rather than fully synth because if the engine ever needs topping up on a run country garages don't keep the selection that major dealers do & it is not recomended to mix mineral / synth.

think you missed the point i was trying to make but its your opinion you go with that

and as for the fully synth you go on about if you need to top up while your out you have a problem and if you have a problem what does it matter anyway dump it and fill it
- no problem

put another way

How much content of this special oil is anti slip ???? 1 % ?? 10 % ???

id prefer knowing my oil is slippery all the time so it doesnt degrade the moving parts in my bike and as for 10% of the oil helping my clutch not slip

BUY a Bike with a proper clutch not a mickey mouse yamaha one like they used to have in the olden days when these oils were developed
