Allo all. Got me an SV650 S for Xmas on a 2001 plate (8000 miles).
Last night on me way home the bladdy chain broke at around 30mph. Only done about 100 miles since i got it so i'm gutted. Now it's under warranty for another 2 months so hit me with it...... will the chain breaking have caused any other damage ??? I've been looking at prices on the web for the chain, sprockets and seen X-ring and O-Ring.... which is the best ??? cheers Ash |

I think the dealer's likely to claim fair wear and tear and it seems highly likely that the previous owner had ever heard of chain lube.
As Lee says (and trust me he's right) replace the chain and sprockets together. As regards prices, I recently bought a new chain (Gold Iris X-ring) for £55 delivered from BFM ( http://www.bfmmotorcycles.co.uk ) and Talon gold sprockets directly from Talon ( http://www.talon-eng.co.uk ) for £35 delivered. Fitting should be around £40. . |

If the dealer won't help try him along the lines of not selling something that was fit for purpose, I know chain and sprokets are consumables but aren't dealers obligated (legally) to sell something thta is fit for purpose and not dangerous. In my book 30 Miles hardly counts as riding it out of the showroom!

Ah I (stupidly) didn't realise that you'd only just bought from a dealer. If that's the case, then there's not even an argument - the dealer HAS to replace the chain though he won't want to do the sprockets. Be aware though that he's likely to put on the cheapest chain he can find so that at the end of the day it might not be the best thing to do though should see you okay for a couple of months through the winter.
If the dealer doesn't want to play ball, then one, name him and shame him on this site (and tell him you're going to do it) and secondly contact your local Trading Standards Office and they'll take it from there. . |

Most likely cause for chain breaking is that it's been too tight (at least some time in its life).
The breaking strength of a chain is way more than an engine can produce, but adjust it too tight and when the suspension compresses it will produce huge forces as it uses up all the slack. As a rough guide you should be able to hold a couple of links flat against the rubbing strip on the underside of the swingarm with gentle finger pressure while it's on the side stand, something like 30mm of free play absolute minimum. If you get new chain/sprockets, well worth thinking of a Scottoiler, they really are worth the dosh. ![]() |

did the chain break..... or the master link fall out ? if the chain & sprocket are worn....then replace.... if not just put it back together with a new masterlink

Sorry to hear that Ash. I commute from Burnley to Blackburn every day, sometimes ride my racer through Rishton (that's bicycle NOT motorbike).
My chain snapped on parking up after getting out of garage just before Xmas. Had done 13,000 miles and I have had it from 6,500 miles. Chain lubed religiously but it was well-knacked, similar to Jonboy's comments ... previous (2) owners didn't lube it me-thinks. Had a tight spot in as well. When I replaced it I measured the old one and it was almost an inch longer than the manual said it should have been (you measure 21 pins if I remember). Anyway got new chains and sprockets off net for about £85, fitted with a split link and then took to Rockets at Blackburn to fit the rivet link (after advice from guys on here ... cheers chaps ![]() Welcome to the board, and particularly from me, as you are in the East Lancs area. I have seen quite a few SVs both naked and faired around the roads, but very few members from our localitiy on here!! Cheers Tony from Burnley PS If you rode down the M65 yesterday at about 4pm it was like scuba-diving it was that wet. Hope you have a fenda extender fitted while I am thinking about it. |

I'm not trying to slag anyone off here BUT If you have only done 100 miles and the chain snapped, I am thinking that the chain MUST have shown some seriously obvious signs of being warn. Such as the adjusters wound all the way back.
Did you not check these things before you bought the bike ![]() ![]() |
