Default The age old question for the SV650: cam chains........

The age old question for the SV650: about cam chains..........

How do you differentiate between camchain ticking noise and valve ticking noise (i.e. valves need checking)?

My bike has had a ticking noise since ive got it. This noise is only heard on idle and mainly when the bike is warmed up. The noise doesnt increase when the bikes revved in neutral. It sounds like cam chain but im not sure and as it seems to be getting louder is it worth changing the tensioner, and how easy is it to check the valve clearances.

Any thoughts to this would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers

In the rare event that the valves are out of adjustment - I've examined many and very few are out - they tend to close up the clearances, rather than open them, as such the valve gear gets quiter, rather than louder.

An SV with valve noise is unusual, cam chain rattles yes, but rarely valve noise.

It can be, depends on the bike.
It's pretty much par for the course on an SV, though.
