Default how do you . . .

when cleaning your chain . . . and you use wd40 to clean the gunk off. . .
what do you do next ?

a- clean the wd40 off (how?)
b- just stick fresh lube over the top ?

quick answers appreciated

cheers

wipe surplus off with a rag, preferably not something you're wearing at the time, ideally leave for a while for solvents to evaporate a bit, and then spray with whatever your preferred tipple is.

Spray lubes have a lot of volatile solvents anyway, so they'll carry off the lighter parts of the WD.

Leave for an hour or so before riding it so it doesn't all fly off again.

Paraffin is a lot cheaper than WD40 for cleaning chains, and it's what they recommend, and if you leave it for several hours it'll dry off on its own. Do a search on paraffin and you'll find threads on chain cleaning.

I'm with you on this one, I was convinced by my local bike shop to switch to wax rather than my usuall lube. "It won the MCN award blah blah blah"

Anyway, my rather non-scientific conclusion is that wax is cr*p

It may be OK for fair weather types, but any hint of bad weather and my chain goes rusty

Parafin is handy to have, it will also clean up wheels etc. a treat.

I use Wurth high performance chain lube and its excellent. Not too expensive and it doesnt fly off at all, not even when just applied.

I use the Wurth clear lube and it's pretty good and you don't see the fling. But with all lube it does get to look dirty after a while as it's sticky and picks up dirt and grime. A few mechanics I've spoken to reckon you cannot beat motor oil, applied with a brush with excess wiped off - no fling, not too stock for muck to hang on to but keep sthe chain well oiled. But I'm stick with Wurth until the can runs out!

Snap. Twice now (different occassions) I've nearly had offs due to chain wax on the back wheel. Doesn't matter how careful you are applying it (I've held carboard etc. in the way) some always seems to manage to get on there. Also, once on, it is an absolute devil to shift. Only thing I've found that works is actually using the bike, albeit very carefully, for 30 miles or so

Scottoiler is definately my next mod, roll on payday...
