Default daft question but bear with me - re cans and power

I am in no way at all mechanical...!!

so - please tell me- in my ignorance why/???

a race can etc gives more power!! -- to my layman brain - when whatever -(exhaled combusted air)?? ) reaches the exhaust to be chucked out how can the end can make a diff to performance

sorry I know tis a thick Q? but I aint an engineer I am a recruitment consultant-- you want the end of a pen chewin and someone referencing then I am yer man- if u need ya big end seein to?? aint me ya need...
evidently
cheers

Short version. The faster you get rid of the exhaust gases, the more power you can produce (not literally true, but good enough) a race can has no barriers to the gas flow.
If we start going into back pressure and messing with the timing then we could be here all night (though I expect I would learn alot)

if you only take the first thing I said into account, then yes, but there is more at play.

if you have too much backpressure (restriction in the Exhause system, ie catalystic converter or baffel's in the end can) then when the inlet and outlet valves are open at the same time (Overlap near top dead centre of the exhaust / induction stroke) the gasses from the exhaust are still expanding,
So if you have no baffel in the way to slow the expanding gasses down then the gasses suck in more clean air+fuel mixture when lthey leave (scavenging) and thus you get a bigger bang resulting in more power.

ok - in layment terms . . . .

more air out - more air in

faster air moving in then out = more power.
